"Soooooooooooooooo...what, you're another shinigami?" Ryuk should start paying attention.

Shinigami was naturally rendered as god of death courtesy of the translation charm, and it caused Nidhögg to tilt his head and narrow his eyes in an expression of mild amusement.

"A serpent from the land of the dead. You are a shinigami?" he guessed, carefully pronouncing the term and tasting this new language. A tongue perhaps younger than any he knew.

Ryuk shrugged. "Shame. You'd be a lot more interesting than the others. Yeah, I'm a shinigami. I'm Ryuk. So what do you do, then?"

"I devour the dead who are sent to Niflheim," Nidhögg replied, as though the rotting, mangled bits of corpses on the floor weren't evidence enough. "And there I have gnawed at the roots of the World Tree for longer than this world has existed." His gaze wandered from the shinigami, again taking in his strange surroundings. The false sky contained within the ceiling continued to fascinate him.

"Cool. Sounds like a good match with me then. I write names in the Death Note, people die. I get their lifespan, you get their bodies."

Never mind that they don't exist in the same fandom.

"Indeed," the dragon agreed, his attention returning to Ryuk as something the shinigami said caught his interest. "What is a Death Note?" Which his mun consistently typos as 'Dethnote' now. Also, Ryuk/Nidhögg would be one hell of a creepy OTP. "You are able to extend your life without Iðunn's golden apples, merely through taking lives? This is the first I've heard of such a thing."

"Ah, then I bet I don't exist in your world." Ryuk shrugged. "That's...just how shinigami live. They write a person's name in a Death Note and whatever lifespan that human had left, it becomes the shinigami's." Ryuk frowned. "You know, I never thought of why I do it."

Awwww, but break up Ryuk/Maddie?

"Wait, golden apples? WHERE?!"

"Presumably so that you may continue existing," Nidhögg suggested, purposely not using the term 'living', for he wasn't sure it could apply to Ryuk.

Oh, poor Maddie deserves Ryuk more. :p

"Youth is the province of Iðunn, and it is she who keeps the apples, which serve a similar purpose as that of your Death Note. They extend lifespans, even those of the gods."

"Aw, man, I want one! I love apples!" Never mind the whole lifespan thing, Ryuk zoomed in on 'apple'.

"And if I should acquire one for you," in some convenient manner that will probably have to be handwaved, "what would you grant me in return, shinigami?"

"Ah ah ah!" Ryuk waggled his finger. "Remember what it says on the application? It's a bribe so I don't vote you to one of the bad houses or out of the school!"

As exchanges went, it certainly could have been worse. Despite knowing the nature of Iðunn's apples, he didn't consider them especially valuable, for he had no need of them himself. Presumably.

"Why should I desire to avoid either of those fates?"

"You know, I don't have the faintest clue, but the Sorting Hat can be mean to people that don't accept that they're here. And I can count on one hand the number of people he's kicked out."

Ryuk grinned. "I think he finds all of us interesting. I don't blame him."
