::Closed RP for Mikami and Nny::

Sep 29, 2009 16:03

Nny had plenty of reasons to detest sleep. But lately there had been another one, a rather distressing one. A whole new set of experiences to spawn disorientingly vivid dreams. This was not helped by the fresh bite wounds circling his neck and the one on the base of his thumb. Proof that it actually had happened, at least once ( Read more... )

The door opening wasn't expected, and Nny leapt to his feet, knocking over his chair in the process. A knife slid into his hand almost of its own accord.

"Why are you here? Who sent you?"

Mikami flinched backward in shock. "Protego!" he shouted, casting the shield charm before his mind could consciously process what was happening. It was lucky for Nny that he'd been trained to defend himself rather than attack.

The first coherent reaction he had after that was at least it's not Karasu. Not that a knife-wielding maniac covered in bite marks was much better.

"No one sent me." He lowered his voice deliberately, to keep it from shaking. "I came to make tea."

"Tea?" He looked suspiciously at Mikami. Pronunciation issues aside, the word was a distinct reminder. And wasn't a bit late at night for most people to be drinking tea?

He ignored the shield charm. Spells weren't Nny's usual method of attack.

"Why?"

"Because I can't sleep." He refrained from adding not that it's any of your business. Especially since now he was thinking, he'd remembered Shield Charms didn't help against knives.

"Why would you want to?" There was actual curiosity in his voice, and he lifted his mug for another sip of hot honeyed milk. "Sleep is a disease."

"...a disease?" Mikami echoed. ...he'd meant that as an actual question, hadn't he? This couldn't be good.

"It steals part of your life." Nny set down his mug and started to pace. "Sucks you down into oblivion, and you awaken without knowledge of the true reality into which you might have emerged. How can you tell what might have changed? It eats you bite by bite, and you're seeking it!!"

Yes, he definitely should have stayed in bed. His instinct was to run, but making sudden movements might be - well, not fatal, but close enough.

"That's as may be," he said, a little unsteadily. "But the human body still needs sleep to function."

"Why?" His tone became softer, more conversational, as if inquiring after the weather. "Why devote your time to feeding such a primitive urge? Any animal can submit to the instinctual blotting out of awareness. Isn't it more human," her pronounced the word with loathing, "To fight to retain conciousness?"

"There's no good answer I can give to that, is there?" Mikami took a small step backward. His wand was still in his hand, and if the other man moved to attack him he should be able to cast a Body-Bind curse in time. Hopefully.

"Is there so much honesty in the world that you think nothing will be harmed by interacting with it in a dishonest manner? 'Absolute Truth' may be a hopeless idea, given subjectivity and the fluid nature of reality, but lies won't bring you closer to it." He grew increasingly animated, but not explicitly threatening.

"In my experience complete honesty isn't often a good idea when someone brandishes a knife at you." He was speaking a little too rapidly, now, but he couldn't seem to stop it.

Nny laughed, twirling the knife in his hand. "Ah yes. Fear. The things people will do in the name of fear! A rat will chew off its own leg to escape a trap. A human will devour someone else's, and shed crocodile tears the whole time about the 'grim necessity' they were really hoping for the opportunity to indulge in all along! Interesting thing, fear."

"That's your view of humanity, then? We're all just looking for excuses to chew one another's legs off?" Encouraging the knife-wielding maniac was also not the best policy, but he was essentially just babbling at this point, under the subconscious impression that acting as though this were a normal conversation with no weapons involved would keep him from being stabbed.

...also, he couldn't help feeling that the man had a point.

"Have you been watching a different planet than I have?" Nny tilted his head. "The way you people treat each other! The world is a clock with broken gears, and all the teeth worn down to fangs. Is it any wonder that the machinery is oiled with blood?"

"Oh, I've seen enough of that." It came out before he could help himself. "But there has to be more to some of us. Or there'd be no point in trying to stop any of it."
