Meg shuddered, thinking of her brother, trapped on Camazotz. "How was she going to do that?" she asked. She didn't really want to know, but was nonetheless compelled to ask.

And Coraline didn't especially like describing it, but she thought she ought to warn people if they asked. "She was going to sew black buttons into my eyes. That's her mark, I think, for all the things she makes. And then she'd take my heart and soul and keep the rest of me locked up forever."

"Ugh. Well, I'm really glad you got away from her then," Meg said with feeling. "Has anyone explained to you about this place yet?" She was all too eager to change the subject.

She nodded again, both in agreement and to answer the question. "Most things. I know about the Hat, and the houses, and that this might be the same world I come from, but it might not."

Meg nodded. "I don't know if this is anybody's universe," she said. "It seems to be topsy-turvy no matter who you are. Anyway, I think you strike me as a Gryffindor."

"Rose is from this universe. Her brother was here as well, but he's gone home. And Zel thought I should try writing to my parents, when I get out of this room." She smiled. "And thank you. I think that's three votes for Gryffindor now."
