"You and I are a few hours off, friend," Austria said with a smile, as he was kindly disposed toward fellow Catholics. (Much better than those Protestants. And France.)

McKenna briefly returned the smile, but he was too confused to be cheerful for long. "What time is it?" he asked. "Will I be here long enough to need to set my watch?"

"I'm afraid you will be. Two. Okay, I was exaggerating, a bit, but I'm not exactly happy to be here either."

"Here being the magic school?" He was getting the bits and pieces, and trying to fit them together. "Do you know what's going on?"

"Not really, though I suspect England's behind this. Though why he would want you is a good question. No offense to you, but he's Anglican."

[patrick_mckenna]

McKenna took the comment in good humor. "Believe me, one of the requirements of being a priest seems to be hearing jokes about why anybody would want one. Besides lawyers, you'd think we're the least useful people on the planet."

"I don't think so. 68% of me is Catholic. And my bosses have usually been so as well. Many of them led the Counter-Reformation."
