Open RP: at the department of forgotten wands

May 04, 2009 16:26

An encounter with Albus Dumbledore in the hallway had turned Mr. Wednesday's thoughts to the vagaries of spring. Huginn and Muninn ranged as far as San Francisco, to alight upon the shoulder of a certain voluptuous lady. Dumbledore had been warbling Chaucer set to music: Whan that Aprille with his shoures sote / The droghte of March hath perced ( Read more... )

"Sounds useful," says a strange (and, to the trained eye, not quite human) young man wearing sunglasses, coming in. "What sorts do you have?"

(OOC: I've decided on a kind for him, but he doesn't actually have one yet.)

"Call it an assortment," says Mr. Wednesday, glancing up. "The oak and the ash and the bonny ivy tree. Their cores are diverse and monstrous. Surprised you'd want one, I must say. Who set you onto us, nightmare?"

(( Dunno if you've read Wednesday's canon -- it's Gaiman's American Gods. Whether there's continuity between Gaimanverses or not, I'm thinking that Wednesday, as a god, will be able to recognize what the Corinthian is. Up to you whether the Corinthian recognizes who Wednesday really is -- and whether you want to be spoiled for it, if so; it's revealed pretty darn early on in the book, and wikipedia will give it away if you don't already know but want to. ;) ))

"Someone here needs to be able to deal with overdoses of Dreamless Sleep and curses of Eternal Waking. And I was bored." Corinthian smiles slightly. "Immortality can be so boring, after a while. As you probably know--for though you are not of my world, I know one of the All-Fathers when I see one."

(I don't think I finished it, but--well, Wednesday? It's too easy.)

(( Yeah, it isn't exactly made a secret -- the first time he shows up in the book, he proclaims that Wednesday is his day, and not all too long after that he comes right out with the not-so-sekrit identity. But some folks are very sensitive about spoilers, so I figured I'd ask. ))

"I thought we had a school nurse for those cases," counters Wednesday, his tone as pleasant as can be. "All the same, it's nice to hear you haven't been sicced on anyone in particular. Or am I mishearing you?"

"Not here, no." He chuckles. "And the last person I was 'sicced on' was my world's version of Loki, in case you were interested.

"He was being a complete moron, he does tend to do that. Way in over his head."

Wednesday's mouth thins in a harsh line for a moment. "I've little cause to mourn him," he lies. "Any world's version. You'll find morons enough here to entertain you, I expect."

He pushes the shoebox of wands gently across the desk toward the Corinthian. "Try some on for size. If one feels right to you, or more right than the others, you're welcome to it."

"Thank you."

He smiles and looks through them. "Holly, ash, yew . . . hmm. I think yew fits me rather well. Symbol of death, after all, and people are so afraid of death . . . ah!"

He picks up a rather nice wand of Irish Yew, and smiles. "I like this one. Thirteen inches . . . and Dementor cloak, hah!"

He starts to laugh, shaking his head. "I should've known."

"Graveyard wood." The professor nods. "Death is here not so fearsome as elsewhere. Keep that in mind, nightmare."

"I keep it well in mind, Odin One-Eyed. But there are thing out there to make men beg for death, and they still hold their fears.

"The Lie-Smith found that out, when I blinded him in both his eyes and gave no knowledge in return."

Two tongues flick out his eyemouths to lick their lids.

"Is that a threat?" Wednesday's voice was dangerously calm. "What became of Laufey's son in your world unsettles me not at all. Some worlds have weaker echoes than others. Weaker gods, weaker incarnations. It takes no bargain with Mimir to know that."

Honestly, trying to fuck with the All-Father? Smooth move, Ex-Lax.

"Oh, hardly a threat. Just saying that I'm still dangerous, even if Death never comes here.

"I'm sure that you are still powerful as well, despite being unable to kill."

"Death has been here in more than one incarnation. On holiday," said Wednesday shortly. "An associate of mine favored a quaint saying: 'There's none so blind as those who will not listen'." He smiled a crooked smile. "Our business is done. Wish you joy of your new acquisition."

"Shouldn't it be 'those who will not see'?

"But anyway. It was a pleasure to meet you, Fimbultýr, Gizurr, Síðskeggr, Valþognir. And I'm sure that we shall meet again."

He bows and takes his leave.

Thinking of old Suibhne and his turns of phrase, Wednesday shook his head, still grinning crookedly, and left the door ajar for the next comer.
