Simon Tam happens to know L socially, through his sister. There was that non-RPed-out Christmas picnic, and on other occasions Simon has run across L here and there. A particularly poignant conversation about popcorn ...
It's hard to tell what L is thinking or feeling. He's even more cerebral than Simon, and he always seems to be concentrating on something or other. So Simon doesn't necessarily pick up that something's wrong. The almost-overflowing tea does hint at distraction.
"Hi. Mind some company?"
He might as well. He wants to get to know his sister's boyfriend's friends a little better. His sister's boyfriend's friends. Weird to think about it that way.
The question drew L from his thoughts, causing his hand to stop, hovering halfway on its journey with another sugar cube. "Ah, Simon. Please," he gestures with the sugar cube, "if you do not mind. How have you been? It has been a while."
Simon sits and orders some tea for himself, along with a dish of strawberries, inspired by L's cheesecake. Simon will never get tired of fresh fruit after his months aboard Serenity. "It's been a while," he agrees, "not because I'm trying to avoid you! Just that I'm trying not to hover over River too much." And the occasions on which Simon would normally see L are occasions when River is with A, and A is with L ...
L nodded slightly. "River seems well adjusted to here," he said, his hand continuing its journey to deposit the sugar cube in the tea. The liquid threatens to spill over and then recedes slightly as the sugar is moistened, liquid replacing air, dissolving the bonds that held the cube in shape. "Though," he says, picking up the tea spoon between his thumb and forefinger, "just what constitutes hovering?" It is almost said to himself. "And just what is letting go?"
Hermione, like L, hated being wrong about anything. Like L, she also rarely thought she was.
She did not know that about L however, and simply saw that he was sitting alone, and he looked like he might be interesting to talk to, so she walked over.
"May I join you?" she asked, moving to the seat opposite him and setting the book she'd been reading down on the table in anticipation of being granted permission.
"It seems you have already answered that question," L said blandly, looking up, his eyes taking in the title of the book as he did. "Light reading?" he asked, pretending the question was serious.
Hermione took the seat and smiled dryly. "Quite a lot, actually." The book was a rather thick, scholarly tome on advanced theories of transfiguration. "It's quite broadening for one's education."
"There are more in-depth books," L commented. "For some reason, they are with the charms books." It was obvious from his tone he thought little of the organizational system of the school library.
A pair of doggie eyes peered over the table edge with a look that obviously said 'I'd like some of whatever you have, thank you'.
That instantly turned to 'I didn't do it' when a voice admonished her. "Yukiko, no. Here." She turned and went back to her master, Soichiro, who was reading a book that no one really cares what he's reading anyway.
L raised an eyebrow and then followed the dog back to her master with his eyes. "Yagami-san," he said. "It's been a while. I did not know you had gotten a dog."
"Yeah." He smiled as he bent down to Yukiko's face and held it. "What have I said about begging?" But it was said in a rather soft voice, so that means she'll eventually do it again. "Her name's Yukiko. She seems to want everyone to be her friend."
"It does seem to be a common trait," L said. "Koopa is much the same." He picked up his fork between his thumb and forefinger. "They are also said to be beneficial for mental stability." Though, truth be told, Koopa frazzled him a good deal of the time, though as the dog settled down, that happened less often.
