Application: Elric of Melnibone (the Elric Saga)

Apr 29, 2009 00:59

A strangely-dressed albino pushed his long, milk-white hair back from his face, staring about the room with wide, cat-like eyes of deep crimson. His eldritch features marked him as one of the line of ancient Melnibone, which he was soon to learn would mean very little here. The muscles in his lithe body tensed in expectation as he surveyed the room ( Read more... )

Another ranter. How familiar.
"If by necromancy you mean reanimation, I could probably assist you, sir."

He spoke quietly, ready to step back in case of fury.

Looking over Igor, Elric decided he was strange, but, did appear to be mortal, even if a rather odd one. He shook his head solemnly, a trace of pain in his voice as he answered.

"I fear that you could not, for, reanimation would accomplish nothing but raising a hollow shell. When the soul is devoured, there is nothing to be done but to mourn. Are you a sorcerer then, sir?"

"Oh." Igor scanned the application again. 'But even the most powerful necromancy could return your soul,' Now that he really looked at it, it was obviously a typo. Agh, I'm a fool.

"No, I'm a scientist!" Igor spoke with pride in his voice, there was no one to contradict him. "Well, if a sorceror is the same thing as wizard, then everyone here is. I just didn't know it until recently."

"Are you certain there's nothing to do but mourning?" Igor asked, trying not to sound critical. Most 'evil scientists' were big on the moping, but they always ended it on an upbeat '...and I will destroy them all!' note. Much more positive.

((Argh, my bad! Leaving out a whole word, I suck. Sorry about that!))

"A scientist, sir? That's very interesting- what sort of things do you study?" Although Elric's home wasn't much of a scientific world, he was still familiar with the 'science' that involved engineering weapons and mixing herbal potions.

He nodded in sad confirmation, explaining, "I am sure. Because her soul is gone, beyond repair. A reanimated shell wouldn't be her." He let out a sigh of deep sorrow, saying only to himself, It is gone because my sword and I devoured it.

((It's ok! Let's say the pen did it.))

"Ah, biological and electronic weaponry. Some day I hope to make my own." He briefly looked lost in happy daydreams. Igor's idea of science was probably the same as Elric's. In his experience, radioactive waste made things bigger and lightning inexplicably brought things to life instead of frying them.

"That's too bad," he added politely. "Are you a warrior?" The man seemed to keep a hand on his sword. "It's a nice sword. Maybe you'd do well in Griffendor."

He nodded his confirmation to Igor. "I appreciate your recommendation regarding this Sorting rite. I am both warrior and sorcerer, and my name is Elric of Melnibone. My sword is called Stormbringer, and, although it is effective, it is not at all a nice sword." He frowned at the weapon, with which he shared a rather twisted love-hate sort of relationship. "I do need it, however, and it needs me, so we have had to learn to work together. As a scientist you might find it interesting. It is a sentient blade- unfortunately, it requires sustenance to function well."

Elric considered, wondering what 'electronic' was. Perhaps a geographical locality? "I have never heard of Electronic weaponry, but, I am familiar with biological sorts." Of course, these were things like golems, but, to Elric, this was science enough. "Do you have a laboratory here, sir?"

"Well then Griffindor ought to fit you. I've never heard of a sentient weapon, but then again, before I came here I'd never met a hat that liked jam." He squinted at the blade, trying to make out any signs of sentience.
"Electronic weaponry? Electronic is...like lightning. Harnessed lightning. Igors are particularly good with that. I don't have a labratory yet, but I'll get to use one when I'm working as a lab assistant." He ended up talking more than usual because of his excitement about that.

"Thank you for that advice, sir, I appreciate it." Elric hoped he'd be able to meet this Hat soon, and see just what it was. He'd never heard of a Lord of Chaos manifesting itself as a hat. "My sword has its own intelligence, it could be called a demon. This demon drinks souls. It is an ancient artifact, so I don't know what arts were used in its forging." Elric glanced down at the sword, adding, "It seems mostly asleep here- the magic of this location seems to drain it of vitality."

He considered Igor's explanation, wrapping it in concepts he could understand. "Is this electronic weaponry at all like the summoning of lightning elementals? I would be curious to see it, someday."

"Uh...demon?" Igor was utterly perplexed. "Lightning's not really an element...you have to wait for a thunderstorm." (Although thunderstorms tended to crop up just when he needed them.) "Then you capture the lightning in batteries, sort of."

"Lightning has elementals, where I am from. There are elementals of the winds, the sea, the earth, the storms. All natural occurrences have them. I cannot seem to sense those intelligences here. Is a battery some sort of device for storing their magical energy?"

Though not really sure what half of the speech meant, Igor nodded in agreement. "Yes, and then the power can be used at any time. If you're curious you should come by when I get my lab set up."

Elric nodded to Igor. "I would be pleased to sir, if I am still on this plane. It sounds very interesting, I thank you for the invitation." He was intrigued by the notion, considering Stormbringer's behavior. It seemed to have storage capacity. Perhaps such a demonstration might reveal something about how the sword was originally created.
