Mar 14, 2009 15:03

Being quite small (in fact, standing next to his adult self, he would barely come up to his older version's knees) Kurama-chan was able to sneak through crawlspaces and secret passageways that most people in Hogwarts didn't even know existed ( Read more... )

Hiei had been trying to find Kurama for about fifteen minutes now. He followed his friend's energy through the castle but kept losing track; something was off. When he finally pinpointed Kurama's location, the demon wasn't anywhere to be seen. Where he should be standing was instead a small boy with unmistakable fox ears and a bushy tail.

After jumping down from the railing of a flight of stairs, Hiei did a double take. "...Kurama?" he almost squeaked. His frown looked like a grimace, but he was just confused.

It was an odd thing that he didn't remember most of his Hogwarts friends, but Hiei he knew on sight. Kurama's face broke into a wide grin and he ran to his friend, tripping over his too-long tail.

"Hiei! I'm gonna be a teacher!"

Hiei stared down at Kurama; it was an unusual sensation. His expression became stony as he ran to Hiei, though he did flinch a bit when the boy tripped on his tail.

"Why are you a child?" he demanded, ignoring the little Kurama's exciting revelation (apparently).

He was hopping from foot to foot, terribly excited about the world at large. "I ate some food and it made me little because I'm really a grownup and I'm a lot taller when I'm grownup and a teacher! Are Yuusuke and Kuwabara here? I wanna tell them, too!"

"Er..." Hiei was awkward in normal social situations, but he was terrible with children. He liked children (contrary to popular belief) but he couldn't understand them at all. His own childhood had been a terrible gauntlet of misfortune that ripped him from innocence early in his youth. And while Hiei still had some maturing to do, he was nothing near Kurama's simulated age. So all he could do was stare for a good half a minute before finally answering.

"No. They're not here," he sounded curt. Did the child think he was mad for some reason? He probably sounded mad. He didn't want to seem angry when he wasn't, so he added (nicely), "I'm the only one from our world who is here right now." That wasn't true anymore, but he didn't want to think about Karasu finding a young, naive version of Kurama.

Kurama's ears drooped a little, saddened both by the lack of his friends, and the apparent disapproval in Hiei's voice. "I'm sorry," he said after a moment. "I'll be all better soon, I just ate some funny food."

Hiei's heart squirmed at the little Kurama's drooping ears. With a sigh of frustration and unusual helplessness Hiei knelt in front of his diminutive friend. "It's fine. What food?" he spoke as gently as he could without making himself feel like a sentimental buffoon.
