Time to roam the halls (Open RP)

Well. He wasn't sure how, but somehow, he had actually been accepted to Crazy Hat's World of Crazy and Magic School despite the overwhelming number of votes against him. He'd have to figure out where Slytherin was, of course. And find some way to retrieve luggage from his Earth. And maybe Moist, if that was possible. But in the meantime, he'd been ( Read more... )

Wednesday had crept out of Ravenclaw and was wandering the halls with Robespierre, her blood python, draped around her shoulders. Her objective may or may not have been milk and cookies. But she stopped when she saw Dr. Horrible.

"My daddy has a coat like that. But the arms cross in front and lace up the back."

Billy was usually a bit awkward around kids, but she didn't seem like a typical kid, after all. "That would be a straight jacket," he replied. "And those are pretty cool. I like them, too, but they don't really fit my theme."

"Why is it a straight jacket when it makes your arms bend?"

It seemed a reasonable question.

((So I was researching the answer and realized that I spelled it wrong. Hope you don't mind. ^^; ))

"Not straight as in straight," he corrected her. "S-T-R-A, uh...I-T. It means tight. Or narrow. Which, the whole point of the jacket is it's too tight to escape."

"My daddy gets out of his. He hangs upside down and gets out." She might be bragging a little, in a small-girlish way. "He does it when Mother's knitting."

"Cool!" He was perfectly sincere, too. "You know, Houdini did it that way, too, I believe. I've never actually seen anyone manage it, though."

"Who's Houdini?"

It wasn't ignorance. She was just educated a little differently.

He wasn't really surprised. She was young, and not many people talked about Houdini anymore outside the magician circles. "He was a world-famous escape artist back around 1900. A lot of the illusions magicians perform now are either copies of his tricks or attempts to do them better."

He was going by memory now rather than actual learning. Houdini hadn't been very high on the list of things he needed to know, but he thought that was right.

"My daddy says the best escapes happen when you're going to be hanged at dawn."

Clearly the words 'my daddy says' were ones that would get very old very quickly around this child.

"He's probably right." Billy nodded. Words to live by, those. Certainly, his best escapes happened when the law was breathing down his collar. "What does your daddy do for a living?" The man was sounding more and more like a fellow supervillain, and it was making Billy wonder it was anyone he knew.

"He's my daddy," she said, as if explaining something patently obvious. She was a bit young yet for concepts like 'old money' or 'idle rich'.

He chuckled. "Oh, of course. How silly of me." He paused for a moment; what did people talk to kids about? It hadn't occurred to him that such a young child probably shouldn't have been walking around without an adult, or carrying a snake around her neck. "I like your snake. What's his name?"

"Robespierre," she told him, patting the thick-bodied serpent, who flicked out his tongue sleepily.

"Good name for a snake," he replied, nodding. "That French guy, right? The Reign of Terror?"

She nodded, favoring Billy with a gap-toothed smile.

"He cut off Marie Antoinette's head!"
