a Yule gift for everyone

Professor (emeritus) Dumbledore did not sign up for the Secret Santa exchange. He felt he lacked for nothing tangible in the world, and he was quite able to supply himself with tchotchkes and sweets. However, he thought that many of the students might feel very alone, here in the Sorting Hat's Hogwarts, away from home.

So to each and every student in the school -- whether he liked them or not, whether he knew them or not, his list obtained from the Headmistress' roster -- Dumbledore sent a small package of sherbet lemons, wrapped with bright paper and a red-and-white striped ribbon.

Even to the nonhumans. He didn't think a few sherbet lemons would do them any harm.

And to each member of the faculty, he sent a pair of socks.

The gifts had no note or other indication of origin, though anyone who knew Dumbledore well enough to discern his love of lemon candies and socks could probably infer it. Dumbledore felt that generosity was best when anonymous; to do otherwise would smack of Slughorn-like pandering. Those inclined to be suspicious of random candy at Hogwarts might be somewhat reassured to see that each of Dumbledore's gifts of candy was still in the original cellophane wrapper.

What? He wasn't going to try making sherbet lemons himself.
