((OOC: Jing is taken from the anime King of Bandit Jing mostly because the mun doesn't have the manga yet, again anymore. Age wise, he's referred to many times as a 'kid' and 'boy.' The only thing for sure is he's under 20 and more than 10 [there's a flash back to when he was 10 and he doesn't argue when he's told he shouldn't be doing something ( Read more... )

That playfulness, that confidence...there had been shadows of that in her father aboveground. Maybe he had been like that when he was this boy's age. Maybe her brother aboveground would be like that when he was older, if he lived.

Ofelia tiptoed closer to get a better look at the boy, over her fairy's protests. The little thing seemed suspicious of the boy, chittering angrily at him.

"Ssh," Ofelia told it, but approached the boy warily. "Hola."

Up close, he wasn't much older than some of the resistance fighters Mercedes knew.

Jing looks at the girl and smiles. "Hello," he replies. Curious, he holds out his hand, empty, offering it to her. "How are you?" he asks with a smile that borders on a friendly grin.

She looked at the hand, then gingerly took it while her fairy hissed and bared its sharp little teeth at the boy.

"I am alright," she said, giving a shy smile that seemed almost scared of itself. "Please do not mind the fairy. She is very protective."

Jing smiles. "Reminds me of a friend of mine, loud and sometimes obnoxious. It's a little strange being here without him."

Loud and obnoxious...oh. That described only one type of person Ofelia knew. And they were bad people.

"...he is a soldier?"

Jing scratches his head. "No, he's an albatross," he explains. "He likes to chase after women and talks to them a lot."

"Oh." That was alright then. Ofelia relaxed a little.

"Is he a good albatross?" she asked. "The last time I met a talking animal, he wasn't very nice. He didn't like talking very much, he preferred to chase creatures and people and eat them."

The Toad had been thoroughly disgusting, in fact. If the albatross was one of the good creatures - or at least not a bad one - then this boy must be alright if they were friends.

"Kir likes talking a lot, Sometimes, he can be difficult to get along with and will go off and sulk for a couple of days then he'll come back. He's good to have around, though," he says, neglecting to mention that Kir is also a weapon. "I got him when he was an egg. He helped me rescue a friend of mine from some trees that wanted to eat her."

A good albatross, then. Ofelia smiled, a smile that didn't seem afraid of itself this time.

"He sounds like my fairy." The fairy squawked. "Although I didn not get her when she was born, but I think she and the other two were young. They helped me steal the knife from the Pale Man."

She pushed some loose hair behind her ear. "I am Princess Moanna. But you can call me Ofelia. What is your name?"

"I'm called Jing," he replies. "Kir has helped me a lot. Why did you steal a knife from the pale man, Ofelia?"

"It was a test," Ofelia explained. "El fauno set me three tasks that I had to complete to prove that I hadn't become mortal while living aboveground. The second one was to steal the Pale Man's knife." She shivered slightly, that had been frightening. "I am glad I did, because that was the knife the Pale Man used to kill children before he ate them."

Jing considers, frowning as he does. "Well, I think that would be a good thing to do, then." He looks at the fairies and then back at the girl. "I stole the sun to protect some Por Vora. They're a creature that explodes when they're jostled too hard, bigger than dynamite. So, stealing a knife used to kill children is a good thing," he says with a firm nod.

"You stole the sun?" Ofelia is a little awed at that. Also a little wistful "I have not seen the sun for a long time. I keep meaning to go outside here to see it, since this castle is mostly aboveground, but I think it might hurt my eyes now. Why did stealing the sun protect your Por Vora?"

Jing reaches into his coat and withdraws a small rock, small enough that if it didn't float, it would fit into the palm of his hand. "This is Io, a moon of Jupiter. It is one of the System Solari stones. The Sun is much bigger."

"Ooooh." Ofelia leaned in to get a better look at the little floating stone, and even the fairy stopped protesting so that it could fly down and examine the stone.

"It is very pretty." Ofelia glanced up at Jing. "But you did not answer my question. Why did stealing it protect them?"

"They were being used to excavate the Sun stone by a very bad man. So, I stole it, without using the Por Vora. So, since the Sun stone wasn't there anymore, there was no need to use the Por Vora."
