Nov 13, 2008 20:58

It was late fall, and A's garden was drifting into winter quiescence. His greenhouse and the mangosteen grove, however, were in full flower! Between the remainder of the pumpkins and the fine crop of mangosteens, A had gone on a bit of a cooking spree ( Read more... )

After having to contain the results of the last offering of unattended food in the Great Hall, Gwendal wanted to make sure that the Maou did not try to apologize by offering more food in the Great Hall. He entered the room, crossed his arms over his chest and looked for signs of his majesty lingering around.

A looked up and smiled a little uncertainly. He'd never met Gwendal, and the man didn't seem entirely friendly.

"Would, would you like a snack?"

Gwendal blinked at the boy. "Did anyone, like an overly enthusiastic boy with black hair and eyes, ask you to do this?" he asked. It wasn't the best description of the Maou, but it would work for now.

"Who?" A merely looked confused. "I, I felt like cooking. I had a lot of pumpkin left over, and some pears, and the zucchini was producing a lot, and there were plenty of mangosteens coming in. So I made snacks, for anyone who wanted some."

"Shibuya Yuuri," Gwendal supplied the name. He looked over the spread on the table. "What are mangosteens?" he asked. The rest he had run across in his explorations of the school.

A had only had the briefest of meetings with Yuuri, and didn't recall his name, so he merely shook his head.

"A mangosteen is a fruit," he told Gwendal. "They grow in warm climates, and they taste very good, a little like a cross between an orange and a peach."

Relieved that Yuuri wasn't involved, Gwendal softened a little. "That sounds quite pleasant. How did you come to have them here?" he asked. "The climate here is not conducive to them."

"It's because of magic," A said, holding out a dish of the sorbet. "One of the applicants gave it to me as a bribe, and he used a spell to keep it warm always."

Gwendal took the bowl, in the back of his mind hearing Wolfram complaining about him taking things from a human, hearing Yuuri argue there was nothing wrong with that and hearing Waltorana not quite as clearly, but agreeing with Wolfram. He ignored it all. "Thank you," he said politely. "Who is Light Yagami?" he asked, looking at the sign again before he took a bite.

"He's bad," A told him firmly. "Don't, oh, don't be around him, avoid him."

"My...employer would believe that everyone can be redeemed," Gwendal said slowly. "He adopted a child sent to kill him," he explained by way of an example. An impulse he objected to at first, but Greta was a nice girl.

"I won't forgive him," A said quietly but with conviction. Oh, not for L, he could never forgive L's murderer.

Gwendal could understand the sentiment. There was the matter of...he'd rather not think about it. "It is a large school," he said, trying to be consoling. "Perhaps you will not see him."

"I don't want to see him. I don't know if I could keep from trying to hurt him, and I, I, I was told don't. But he can't have any of my snacks."

Gwendal felt he was slipping down a slope into a sand panda's lair. He took a bite of the sorbet. "This is very good," he said when he swallowed the bite.

"Thank you," A said with a smile. "I am very happy with the mangosteen grove. Mangosteens are kind of rare but I have plenty. It's nice to let people try something they probably wouldn't be able to otherwise."
