((OOC: the nerd in me...metathought is to think about thought...))

After what could only be called a disasterous conversation, L was not really wanting to be alone with his own thoughts. To be alone meant he had to reevaluate his own thinking processes in the face of new evidence, something he greatly detested. He was the world's three greatest ( Read more... )

Oliver Wood sat down at the other end of the table, carrying a huge plate of food. With obvious enjoyment, he dug in. Quidditch worked up an appetite.

"Oi. Want some tea with your sugar?" he asked.

L glanced down the table then back at his own cup. With a quirk of his lips, he replied, "Only enough to make the sugar drinkable." It was feeble, but it was a joke he'd heard somewhere.

He smiled. Oliver liked simple humor, because dry wit wasn't his forte. "Carry on, then," he said, waving his fork. "Or better yet, have any sugar to spare?" He'd munch on a cube or two.

L glanced at the sugar bowl a moment before picking it up, walking in a slouch to the end of the table, placing it before the other boy and walking back to hop back on the bench. "I can get more if needed," he said, resuming his pattern of stacking and putting sugar in his tea.

"Thanks." Oliver went back to his food, then paused as something occurred to him. "Hey, have you ever had one of those Muggle energy drinks?" he asked.

"A few," L replied. They were just starting to be popular from his time period. "They don't have enough sugar to maintain proper brain functioning," he said, adding more sugar both to his tea and the tower.

Pft. Who worried about brain functioning? Well, besides things like preventing concussions. "Do they really give you wings?" Somebody had not yet explained Muggle advertising to Oliver.

L looked down the table, frowning slightly. "As in, do wings sprout from your back, as in their animated advertising?" he asked, his tone bland and he struggled to believe he was hearing what he just heard.

Oliver realized that he'd just asked something completely stupid to somebody coming from the Muggle side of Hogwarts. He took courage in the fact that many of the new students had never even heard of a flying broom, never mind a Quaffle, and chalked it up to cultural exchange. If they got to boggle over moving staircases, he could ask dumb questions about energy drinks.

"Well, yes," he said. It could happen.

L turned back to his tea. "Not in my experience," he replied, a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth.

"Oh." He was slightly disappointed, but shrugged it off. In the wizarding world, if a drink said it gave you wings, you'd be flying, like it or not. "So then why do people drink them?"

L shrugged slightly. "They contain a high concentration of caffeine and often other additives, such as taurine, that are thought to help produce and prolong energy."

"That's it?" This was probably a good thing. That meant it was safe to drink that can of Red Bull that had been sitting in his room for a while.

"So there's no lightning or sparkles or flying or anything like that?"

L shook his head. "Not in my experience, but as I said, I did not find them to my liking." He pressed his thumb against his mouth. "Nor have I heard any reports of such effects. They would have most likely been removed from the market, had they had them, as 'Muggles' do not expect those effects from beverages." Assuming, of course, that they were acceptable to non-Muggles.

He sighed. "How can you trust anything you eat or drink if it doesn't do what it says it does?" This was false advertising! "It tells you one thing, but when you drink it, it doesn't deliver. I'd want my money back."

L considered this a moment. "Most...muggles...expect the wings to be figurative, energy to complete their tasks. With the advertisings being animated, this adds to that expectation. Though, I am sure, you could talk with the store you purchased it from about returning it."
