Silmeria Valkyrie; Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria

Stay together. Stay together. Stay together. Stay together…

This was Silmeria’s mantra following the destruction of Alicia’s body, the vessel that housed the souls of three valkyries and a mortal girl. The sheer divine power wielded by three merged goddesses was ultimately too much for the tiny human body they inhabited, but it was enough to exact justice on the madman that threatened them. After Lezard Valeth dematerialized into nothingness, Alicia’s body soon followed suit.

Four gleaming and decidedly distinct souls surged upwards, towards the generally direction of Asgard.

As powerful as they had been during the final battle, the aftermath left them drained and their resources fragmented. Each soul struggled alongside the other, relying on what was left of their conjoined power to survive the trek to Valhalla. For Silmeria, the longer the journey took, the harder it was to stay focused; an unpreserved soul without a body did not last for long. All her efforts were bent towards the fulfillment of the aforementioned two-word chant, but time was leeching her strength and resolve.  Silmeria felt her soul stretched thinner and thinner, until she was on the brink of despair.

When she detected the distant but familiar and rock-steady source of magical energy, she was as a moth to a flame.

No longer able to propel herself forward, Silmeria wafted on the breeze. She floated into the room of a strange, but subtly powerful castle. Though it tasted nothing like the magic she was tracking, she was grateful for it nonetheless. Simply by entering the castle, she was gifted with enough of the castle’s own radiant energy to rematerialize into her corporal form, her purple armor shining and battle-ready.

As quickly as the power was gained, it was spent.  Soon after taking shape, Silmeria crashed to her knees.  With an un-ladylike grunt, she shoved herself against the wall and breathed heavily. The weight of her protective gear, which was normally never a burden, felt like anchors on her limbs. With all the coordination of a newborn kitten, Silmeria removed her feathered helmet and unsheathed her sword. The blonde goddess breathed a sigh of relief at having escaped the strain of near-oblivion and rested on the stone floor. She closed her eyes and passively drank in the foreign magic emanating from the room.

After a while, Silmeria re-gathered her wits and frowned as she took in her current situation. Alicia, Lenneth, and Hrist had not followed her. She had assumed they had sensed the energy source and were as eager to reach it as she was. Surely they would not attempt continuing traveling, starving as they all were? Silmeria was hesitant to imagine that she had gotten herself lost, but it was quickly appearing to be the case. She looked out the window she had entered through in contemplation. This unfamiliar magic was slow to take within her and barely brought her above the power of a mortal, but she knew she would not survive being separated from it for long. She would have to bide her time at this stronghold.

If they were willing to have me, that is.

And of course, she had to discover what it was that drew her here in the first place. It felt so intimately familiar…

Just then, a series of disembodied questions rang out.

1. What is your favorite cheese? Why is it your favorite?

Silmeria blinked. An interrogation of some sort would only be expected after her uninvited entrance, but this wasn’t quite what she had anticipated. Still, Silmeria was in no position to argue and with enough good will, she could gather the allies she would need to heal herself and ultimately rejoin her sisters and Alicia.

After a moment’s reflection, Silmeria spoke.

“As a goddess, I do not require meals. However, during the time I had spent sharing a body with a mortal girl named Alicia, I had come to enjoy the times when she indulged in fresh mozzarella. The texture was delightful.”

2. Who would you kill first, Barney or Carrottop?

“My duty is not to kill mortals, only collect the souls of the worthy after their death. Should these individuals be elves, I would be strictly forbidden to destroy them. Should these be undead, I will not hesitate to purify them where they stood...”

Silmeria thought of Brahms and fell silent. “I would not hesitate,” she amended, “should they force my hand.”

3. What time is it where you are?

Without the creation of a sun or moon in Lezard’s world, Silmeria found herself genuinely stumped. This did not reflect in her stern expression, however. Silmeria did not allow for emotions to reach her face, if she could help it.

“I fear that Lezard had little use for conventional measures of time when he created his world, the world I last remember.”

She did, however, let emotions reach her voice. And usually often.

“Or perhaps he simply had forgotten such a detail in his over-eager attempt to play with his ill-gotten power,” she muttered bitterly.

4. If you were Albus Dumbledore returned from the dead, which member of the Order of the Phoenix would you sexually harass? How would you harass them? If you are Albus Dumbledore, please answer as if you were Sirius Black.

Silmeria’s cat-like eyes narrowed dangerously.

“I have absolutely no desire to force myself on others in such a barbaric manner! And dark will be the day for any soul I find doing the same.”

5. If you are pushing to be in:

A. Slytherin - please state the clever, witty name of the bar in which you bartend, in the dark.

If the gods lacked in food, they made up for it with beer, ale and all manner of alcoholic beverages. Though she did not partake, usually due to be asleep in a human or on duty collecting Einherjar, she did know of a popular well from which mead eternally sprung.

“I would name it Byrgir,” Silmeria stated flatly.

That was as good a name as any.

B. Gryffindor - Debate whether Harry should ultimately end up married to Fred or George. Use examples from a variety of world mythologies to bolster your argument.

“On Midgard, though there is no shame for the man who takes a male lover, there is much shame associated with the man allowing himself to be taken. If either Fred or George were willing to face such a fate in the name of love, then that is the man worthy of Harry.”

C. Ravenclaw - You guys are supposed to be smart. Explain why my desk is inundated with paperwork at all times, even though I’m constantly disposing of it.

“If papers come to you against your will, you must fight them. Submission to hostile, outside forces is unacceptable!”

Even if those hostile, outside forces were the very gods you once called ‘family.’

D. Hufflepuff - Prove you are not useless.

A pained look flashed briefly in Silmeria’s eyes. Of course, the most difficult question of all was the last to appear. (As was the natural progression of such adventures.)

Prove she was not useless? She could barely stand! Yet she could not allow that to show, lest she be left to rot in a dungeon or worse. Silmeria straightened her back against the wall and spoke in an authoritative tone.

“I am a Goddess of Fate, a valkyrie of Valhalla. I bear the responsibility of choosing the souls of fallen warriors to worthy enough to fight for the gods. The powers granted to me for this task include flight, skill in combat, proficiency with all weapons, object reading, sacred light, and the finishing blow Nibelung Valesti.”

It wasn’t a lie.

6. Offer a bribe to the members of this community so that they will not squib you. Items used in bribery do not necessarily have to belong to the person offering the bribe. Do not threaten us rather than offering a bribe. A threat indicates you either don't really want to be here, or don't have enough sense to answer the question properly. The hat will automatically squib you, regardless of other votes, if you do

The thought of bribes -- stolen bribes, no less -- made Silmeria frown. It reeked of corruption, and though she fought to defend humans from the ways of uncaring gods, the sins of mortals were sometimes difficult to reconcile.  She decided instead to view this request as a transaction of services; a place for her to heal in exchange for her sword.

“If I am granted stay in your castle, I will pledge my loyalty and abilities to any just causes presented to me, regardless of who may ask.”
