Severus writes the note very carefully in his patriotic green ink, with additional flourishes and thin double lines on the major stanchions of the letters. He pauses several times to ensure it is worded properly.
Daisy tilts her head to Severus' and smiles lazily. "I suppose so. Certainly excited, but it wasn't my judgement whether I was sweet or beautiful. And I took a car to the train station, where I took a train to New York City. I never went back, and I certainly never second guessed that fact. No one much cared that I left, but such things are why I left that wretched place. No one should ever go unloved."
She snuggles closer to Severus, placing a hand on his chest to steady herself. Her cheek presses to his neck and their skin touches briefly. It sends a chill up her spin and her shoulders to shake slightly. It is not that Severus is cold to her, but that it had been one their first skin contacts besides hands and lips.
They didn't love her? How could that be? But he feels closer still for her having said these things. They have more in common; can understand one another better. As she curls against him he wraps both arms around her again, cuddling her to him. The little shiver is a small pleasure that moves him. He feels as if he is caring for her, as if he is a good person for once. "I love you." He says the words naturally to reassure her, liking the knowledge that he can be reassuring. Then realises they are likely to do the opposite. People... don't listen to the words, worry over things that are so simple and pure. She will leap up and run away, and he will still love her. He tries to recover.
"It is all right, Daisy. It is something I feel. It is all right." He rearranges his cloak around her so he is not holding her too tight yet is still being attentive. He keeps his voice quiet.
Daisy's head perks up and she bites her lip. He loves her? How can that be? It's understandable for men like Gatsby and Tom to fall in love with the idea of her, but Severus has seen her almost true side. As true as she's going to get, and she's seen his. So how does it happen that she seems to feel the same?
"I-I love you too, Sev." She stutters at first, but finishes the statement confidently so he knows she's not saying to make him feel better. "I don't think I've ever meant it before, but I do with you." She kisses him gently, and eventually adds more pressure. She is sick of being proper, because proper hasn't gotten her anywhere. She has not meant love before this moment and wishes to kiss Severus with all the emotion she feels for him. She wants to empty her heart into him by this kiss.
Me? But her tone tells him she is not returning it because she feels obliged to reply in kind. His breath catches. Me? And he kisses her back, telling her with touch that he means it. He puts his feeling into his kiss as well. The small gentlenesses of amazement, the excitement as he presses his lips to hers, the the depth that reaches far within him, even in his literal chest. He wants to hold her tightly. He doesn't want this lovely time to move forward.
Can he speak? Maybe it isn't necessary right now. The three little words expressed so much. He listens to her instead, the touches and movement of her lips. He is not unloved? Me?
Her hands hold his head steady, as her body twists slightly to get at a better angle for kissing him deeper. Her tongue slides against his lips and presses at the crease of his lips before retreating back into her own mouth. She doesn't want to push it with Severus, and she realizes for the first time, that she actually wants to take it slow with him. She lessens some of the pressure and eventually pulls back, blushing. To finish the act, she kisses his cheek and smiles.
He feels her back, the muscles that surround her spine as she turns. He wants to be sure she is comfortable. When she begins to kiss him, her tongue asking at his lips, he parts them, but he is a little late. He can feel the heat rise in her face. "Daisy." He says her name, his voice smiling, an element of joy. Some of this is wildness and suddenly inspires him to do odd things - perhaps to run and leap into the lake, or to climb the tree behind him.
He does not do that but recognises the impulse. He smiles to her when she speaks, his mouth open to show his teeth, happy. He takes her close again and hugs her, tightening his eyes closed, his cheek against her hair. "Daisy. Yes. I love you. It feels good to say." He tells her a small vulnerable confidence. "It feels so good when you say it, too."
Daisy giggles and looks up at Severus. "I know it does, silly. It feels even better when you say it to me." She shifts her body and gets up, pulling Severus by the arm up as well. She immediately pulls him into a kiss and slips off her shoes stealthily with her feet. On her tiptoes she leans up to his ear and whispers, "Come catch me, Sev" before dashing off playfully towards the woods.
Severus does not know what she intends at first. He rises at her hand and kisses, caught in the last rays of the sun. Then she runs... the Forbidden Forest! "Daisy! No! Not at night!" He runs after her, as fast as he can, and he still runs - most mornings - down by the lake. This is serious.
"It's dangerous, even for me!" He catches up with her, wand out. His cloak fallen behind him on the ground so it will not keep him by catching if he needs to fight. "There are all kinds of creatures here, with dark magic, and they hate humans. Or wizards. They won't come out, but if we venture in..."
"Go out ahead of me, please? We can come back a little ways during the day sometime. I'll keep watch out." His voice is urgent and afraid.
Daisy nods, taking Severus' hand tight in hers. "I'm sorry...I didn't realize..." she looks down at her feet, then back up when she remembers she's supposed to be on lookout. "I-I didn't think anything would happen."
She stays silent the small walk back, and even comes across Severus' cloak, picking it up for him, wordlessly. When they're back to the tree, she turns to him and kisses him, shaking slightly. "I'm so sorry Sev. I-I just wanted to try s-something and it failed miserably."
After they leave the forest he relaxes a little. Nothing happened, though he well knows it could have, but he is a little ashamed of his panic. He draws and holds her close against him. "Daisy, I'm sorry. I was afraid for you. I was just afraid. They used to tell the new students - it was almost the first of the school rules. And I've seen what it - the forest - can produce. It's all right Daisy. We will have fun."
The little lights shine silver and green around them and he takes the cloak and wraps it about her. "Daisy. Darling. I couldn't bear to have anything happen to you. It's all right." he kisses her - cheeks, lips, brows.
She smiles sadly and nods, "I understand. I was just being foolish. I wanted you to run after me. I was going to surprise you." She pulls herself to his chest and holds him tight to her. "I wasn't thinking."
The lights dance across Severus' face and Daisy smiles a little brighter. "Sev, can we head back soon? It's getting cold out a-and now that I know what's in the forest, I don't want to be near here at dark."
She kisses his cheek and whispers to him again, "It was very valiant of you to come save me. ... My hero."
It is good it is dark, for he blushes again at this, though maybe she can feel the heat from his face. He can't leave it at that, must be honest for her. But he knows she does not want to hear it. "I'm not a hero." He breathes it. Then he says more definitely, "But I will do my best to protect you if ever you need it." He can say that, and it does not summon twinges of darkness.
"We will take the picnic basket, shall we?" He packs the soft cake, the salads and sweets with the butterbeer and dishes. The blankets he folds to the top with a flick of his wand. "You aren't foolish, not at all. If the forest had been safe it would have been pretty and we could have laughed. It would have been lovely." He looks at her and opens his arms again with the basket, so he can apparate with her. "But it is lovely now too."
He looks within himself as he finds trust that she will come to him, and he smiles again. He can love. He can trust.
"I didn't say you were a hero, I said you were my hero, Sev. Take a compliment for once." Daisy steps to Severus and grips him tightly, also planting a hard kiss on him lips as they apparate. When they land outside the Slytherin entrance, she is still connected to his lips, fighting the urge to blush and walk away, and the opposite urge to force herself on him. She is in between a tug of war with her emotions. She giggles at her childishness and kisses him again before uttering the password and stepping inside.
"Will you do something for me, dear?" She undoes her own cloak and throws it over an empty armchair.
"Thank you, Daisy." He belatedly, again, remembers his best manners. He is unused to compliments. He wants to hold her quietly a moment. The evening is ending so suddenly. When she drops her cloak he finds himself straightening its folds, a small continued contact. There is a touch of nervousness. "And thank you so much for the beautiful picnic."
When she kisses him, his hand lingers a fraction longer on her arm than necessary as he returns it.
"What would you like me to do, Daisy?" His voice is warm. He brushes her face with his hand. "Dear."
"Thank you for a lovely picnic, Sev. It was wonderful. And I love your tree." She turns to face the fire and smirks into it before turning back to face Severus, her hand held to her back. She reaches up to the zipper on her dress and unzips it, without drawing attention to it. She takes a step towards Severus and it falls slowly; first, over her shoulders, then down her hips, until it is a pile on the floor. She steps out of it and right up to Severus.
"I would love if you spent the night with me again. And also, I told you I wouldn't forget, you said you had a secret surprise for me...something you weren't sure people did for others they loved? I don't want to be left in the dust."
She drapes her arms over Severus' shoulders and leans herself against him, in just a slip, underwear, and the small heels she wore to the picnic. "Seeing as I'm someone you love..." she kisses his cheek.
He gasps. Nothing had prepared him for this. "Daisy." He touches the silk with his fingertips, her bare skin just beneath it. "Daisy."
But speechlessness will not do. "I would love to spend the night with you."
The soft smoothness, the warmth of her body. He feels light-headed, shy, irresistibly drawn, at the same time hoping his skin does not catch on the delicate fabric. How he had used to smile in superiority when he found clothing of the older students. And now, he saw how easy it was. Even he, who never exposed so much as a wrist, felt inspired to shed his clothing that she might touch him as he touched her. "I will tell you in bed. It is a new idea I have had. It isn't... it isn't... er, carnal, but deeply personal. Something special - something magic, though the magic is not worked on you, or within you. It is not dangerous." He can't help but still be a little excited at this despite himself
