Character: Vanyel Ashkevron from Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar books. The character is being apped immediately after attempting suicide following the suicide of his lover, Tylendel. Rather than being Chosen, as he was in the books, he insetad woke from his suicide attempt to find himself here

"Midnight? Tell me, was it also a dark and stormy night? I'd forgotten how dramatic kids these days were."

Gust sets his hands on his hips.

He looked over at the other man cooly. "It was, in fact. Sovvan night, actually. And if you consider a blood feud dramatic, I think that's rather your problem, not mine," he said, his voice sharp.

"I have no idea what a Sovvan is."

So they have this established.

"Harvest festival," he said flatly.

"Peachy. So do you know where you are?"

"No," he said flatly. "I was in the temple, and then I woke up here." He found this man a bit odd, but relatively reasonable thus far.

"It's a castle called Hogwarts. It teaches magic. Loosely speaking."

Gust has managed to avoid learning any.

He raised an eyebrow. "So I go from a castle teaching magic to Heralds to one teaching some other form of magic. Of course, I'm just as likely to lack the prerequisites here as I did there."

"It figures. So which kingdom is this, anyways? Someone must've pushed me through a gate while I was unconscious."

"Scotland. It's not really a Kingdom."

Faintly amused.

"And I don't know what a Herald is. You're probably in another universe."

[vanyel_peacock]

"Ah," he said, deciding that none of this made any sense. "I suppose it doesn't matter what a Herald is, if there aren't any here," he said.

"Not really, though if you are one explaining it to me might make sorting you easier."

Gust shrugs.

"I'm not," he said flatly. "Just living with some of them before all this," he said.

"Well, that's of no help."

Bah.

"Firstborn son of minor nobility, if that helps," he said. "And sometime lute-player."

"So, are you noble?"

Brave, noble, same thing.

He laughed. "Next best thing to disowned. I'm sure the letter disowning me was on its way," he said with a laugh. "My father has plenty of other sons. Sons that meet his need better, anyways."
