Application for Naomi Misora, Death Note

May 14, 2008 12:10

((Permission granted from muns for Light, L, and B. Spoilers for Another Note. Naomi is taken from the very end of episode 7/chapter 14. She hasn’t technically died at this point, though she’s been put under control of the Death Note.))

Raye dead Kira had me fooled Raye dead by Kira I’ve been had good as dead anyway what is there left -

Naomi’s head snapped up. She gasped, and it felt as though she’d been holding the air for it in her lungs for an eternity. As she did, she realized that she was feeling warmer by the moment under the layers of black leather jacket and sweater, and this was by no stretch of the imagination a Tokyo street.

It would have been easy for her to lose track, during that blurry period where she’d been… walking away? Why would she have done that when Kira had just identified himself outright -

If Kira could control his victims before death, though, he could conceivably have controlled her into walking away. Into walking all the way into what looked like a room of an old European castle.

She didn’t feel controlled, or drowned in despairing thoughts any longer, but when she tried to retrace her steps she discovered that she couldn’t leave the room. There were no locked doors, or people standing in the way. She simply couldn’t. It could be that Kira still exercised some control, keeping her in here to die. Still, things didn’t match up.

… maybe, somewhere in that blur, she’d died already.

After an investigation of the room and questioning of several house elves, Naomi made for the table they’d directed her to, peeling off her gloves along the way, and picked up the quill. The Kira case had its strange aspects, to be sure, but she hadn’t felt so at sea for a while. Until she could get more information about the situation, she might as well fill out the form.

After all, what further trouble could she get into by writing things down?

1. What is your favorite cheese? Why is it your favorite?
String cheese. Or mozzarella, since string cheese is really a way of preparing it. As string cheese, it’s convenient.

2. Who would you kill first, Barney or Carrottop?
Naomi couldn’t be said to be big on killing. Her biggest case (her biggest closed case) had ended in her saving the culprit’s life (granted, he hadn’t been so happy about that). Recent events tended to sour her on the idea even more (except maybe in the case of Light Yagami, who she could imagine filling with lead).

There aren’t that many people, she settled on, who warrant killing. Not nearly as many as some would think.

3. What time is it where you are?
1:25 PM.

Why had that popped into her head so readily? She looked down to see a house elf bobbing at her side. “Excuse me. Do you know the time?”

The time was duly given. “Thank you,” she said, and wrote it down. It was not 1:25.

4. If you were Albus Dumbledore returned from the dead, which member of the Order of the Phoenix would you sexually harass? How would you harass them? If you are Albus Dumbledore, please answer as if you were Sirius Black.
“…?!”

Naomi ascertained, after looking through the rest of the questions and asking further ones of the house elves, that this was not in fact an application for Creepy and Pathetic Deviants of the World but rather, so they insisted, an application for an avant-garde and possibly Scottish school of magic. Her suspension of disbelief well bolstered by the goings-on of the Kira case, Naomi could accept this explanation enough to keep writing for the moment.

None of them. I’m engaged. Disregarding the tenses for now. Her smile was fairly bitter. Unless the Order of the Phoenix includes a Raye Penber?

It wasn’t that outlandish, given the mention of return from the dead. Look where she had ended up.

5. If you are pushing to be in:

A. Slytherin - please state the clever, witty name of the bar in which you bartend, in the dark.
She closed her eyes briefly. If I did, it would be ”Penber’s.” It sounds more barlike than- A spreading inkblot formed from the point of the quill as she considered whether she should stay with her false name, Shoko Maki, even here. The damage had already been well done, she decided. When she looked down the inkblot had devoured her last word.

-than “Misora’s,” and I doubt Raye would mind. And Penber had almost been her name.

She wondered - if she’d been Mrs. Penber, would Kira have had to spend another stretch of time ferreting out her maiden name? That no longer mattered, either.

Still… She addressed a house elf. “Is there any other paper? Writing paper?”

With nearly a ream of paper quickly delivered, she said thank you again and busied herself writing out her conclusions regarding Kira - starting with his identity, in case she got cut off in the middle of a chronological telling. She wasn’t, so she signed it, then wrote out another two copies, signed them, and folded up the lot. One she left on the table atop the stack of remaining paper, another she hid elsewhere in the room, and the last she gave back to the house elf with mailing instructions. The house elf looked mystified but agreed to comply. Naomi knew better than to trust them implicitly, but so far she saw no one else to turn to. If she’d somehow escaped Kira, if only temporarily, she intended to make the most of it.

She had no idea what the FBI would make of the sudden delivery by owl, nor the puzzling over its contents. She certainly wouldn’t be aware of the subsequent cover-up action that would be undertaken by American wizards, most of who were just as puzzled.

This done, she returned to the application.

B. Gryffindor - Debate whether Harry should ultimately end up married to Fred or George. Use examples from a variety of world mythologies to bolster your argument.

Naomi was aware of civil unions and domestic partnerships, as well as the possibility that one or more of the names might be deceiving. Speaking from personal experience first, who would Harry wear a wedding dress for? For that matter, who would wear a wedding dress for Harry? Not that she would have actually wanted Raye in drag at the wedding, but it was the principle of the thing.

Now for the mythology part. Izanagi and Izanami were separated once by death, but they were separated for good when Izanagi fled. He’d seen how decayed Izanami became in the underworld. Going off that, Harry should marry the one of them who would stay with him regardless.

C. Ravenclaw - You guys are supposed to be smart. Explain why my desk is inundated with paperwork at all times, even though I’m constantly disposing of it.
You might try checking to see if it’s all your paperwork. Some people might think it’s a fantastic joke to slip you theirs. Her competence had been recognized by most of her colleagues in the FBI, but she wasn’t nearly as liked on a personal level, and the combination sometimes led to such tricks. But paperwork naturally comes in piles, and it might just be the normal rate, depending on your job.

D. Hufflepuff - Prove you are not useless.
Being recently in the process of, she was fairly sure, walking to her death after outright showing Kira her real name was not conducive to a very confident answer for this one, but she made an effort.

Until three months ago, I was an FBI agent in good standing. The “good standing” was in case someone looked at her age and her tenses (but you’re young and beautiful and you’ve got your life ahead of you - as said by the young and clean-cut two-faced monster) and came to the not-entirely-unreasonable conclusion she’d been dismissed. I worked with L on the Los Angeles BB Murder Cases. Which reminded her - Also, I know capoeira. What were the chances of that again becoming a crucial tidbit of knowledge in the way of who was supposed to know it?

6. Offer a bribe to the members of this community so that they will not squib you. Items used in bribery do not necessarily have to belong to the person offering the bribe. Do not threaten us rather than offering a bribe. A threat indicates you either don't really want to be here, or don't have enough sense to answer the question properly. The hat will automatically squib you, regardless of other votes, if you do.
“That’s… very forthright.” The house elves seemed nervous when she asked about squibbing, and when in Rome…

I have some money in my accounts in the States. There was still a good chunk left from her payment for the aforementioned Los Angeles case. Thus far, her major expenditure out of it had been a replacement for the laptop she’d had to junk at the time.

I also have a collection of leather jackets at home. I could part with a few. Accordingly, she shrugged out of the one she was wearing at the moment and draped it over her arm. It was one of her best; if she was going to show up at her parents’ in a leather jacket, she’d reasoned when packing, she was certainly not showing up in a shoddy one on top of that. On that note - And there are some skirts and dresses that could use a good home. Various styles, high quality, never worn.

Now, was there somewhere she was meant to turn in the part of the bribe she had with her? She tried to flag down a house elf, but the one whose attention she caught vanished the moment she held out her jacket. She stared at the just-occupied space and decided to keep hold of the jacket for the moment. It wasn’t as though she was anxious to part with it.
