owl to Severus Snape, head of the hospital wing, from Dr. Krogshøj

Rigshospitalet was eminent both in research and in teaching. While Hook himself was not a teacher, many of his superiors there were both working doctors and professors. The faculty roster said the hospital wing had just been taken over by one Professor Snape. The situations might be analogous, Hook figured. If not, well, he would see about ( Read more... )

Dear Dr. Krogshøj,

Please report to the Hospital Wing this afternoon at 2pm that we might discuss your employment. I am very pleased to hear you have been sorted into Slytherin House. My congratulations and welcome. I too am a Slytherin, since my long-ago youth. I am not sure how you may be deceased, but there are many things in Hogwarts that are extraordinary. I do hope you are corporeal enough to handle objects.

Yours truly,
Severus Snape.

Rather than write back to assure Severus Snape that he was indeed sufficiently corporeal to handle objects, Hook thought it best simply to show up in person. A handshake ought to be proof enough.

His wristwatch was even working. Peculiar. Well, it let him arrive on time, anyway. An obliging house elf pointed him in the right direction, and Hook was at the Hospital Wing at 1400 hours, on the dot.

He let himself in. There didn't appear to be any patients at present. "Professor Snape?"

Severus had time to bathe and rest and was much more himself. He had visited the hospital wing, if not exactly familiarised himself with it. He was relieved there were no patients yet, but knew he must be ready for, students being what they were, he could well imagine hordes coming in at any time. Staff would be welcome. It was almost two and he moved into the office and stood behind the desk. His desk.

A voice in the main ward and he emerged. "Professor Snape. Yes. And you are Dr. Krogshøj."

The man looked as if he were living. There was no ectoplasm, no transparency, no etherial gleam.

"Welcome to Slytherin." Slytherin first. But Severus would be glad to have a medical doctor on his staff. He knew that wizard perils were one thing, but the school was full of muggles now and he himself knew little enough of muggle medicine.

"Thanks. I've heard good things about it." That was a straight-faced pleasant lie. "Living in the dungeons suits me just fine." That was true. He'd appropriated one of the basement rooms in The Kingdom as improvised living quarters and a general HQ for his various activities. He approached Snape and extended a quite corporeal hand. "I'm Dr. Krogshøj, yes. Everyone calls me Hook." Krog. It came out in English again. "Because that's what the first part of my last name means," he explained. "It'll be good to be useful. I suspect that being dead in the outside world means my career there is kaput."
