::Open RP: Kitten-Smitten::

While A, as a general rule, is content to stay in his room, Schrodinger is a growing kitten, and always eager to explore and play. A's room is small, and even a tiny kitten seems to need space, so A has taken her to the Great Hall, where there is space for her to frolic ( Read more... )

Petulia was in the great hall for approximately the same reason, except for that in her case it was four piglets rather than a kitten. She'd found some leashes for them, so at least they weren't running around willy-nilly. Well, three of them weren't.

One, which she had affectionately named Doofus, managed to yank his lead from her hand and took off across the Great Hall. Petulia ran after him, the other three piglets very surprised and doing their best to keep up, and finally managed to step on the trailing end of the leash. Doofus was brought up short with a squeek, a few feet from where A was playing with Schrodinger.

"Bad piggy, Doofus," she scolded, stooping to pick up the leash and loop it more securely around her hand. She looked at A, smiling apologetically. "Sorry. He's not very well trained, yet."

A had already laid a protective hand on Schrodinger's back, ready to scoop her up and shelter her. The piglets weren't all that big and they looked harmless, but he didn't want to take any chances.

"I don't think cats are meant to be trained. But she is young, and very reckless."

"I, um, meant my piglet, not your kitten," Petulia said. "I'm teaching him to walk on a leash now, so he'll do it when he's bigger. Your kitten looks like she's doing just fine," she added, and wrapped the piglets' leads around her wrist several times to keep them close, before carefully holding out a hand toward Schrodinger. "What's her name?"

"She's called Schrodinger." The kitten sniffed amiably at this new person, ready to receive the adoration that was her feline due. "Be careful, she chews on fingers." He smiled a little weakly. "I'm A."

Petulia scratched Schrodinger behind the ears. "I'm Petulia. These are, um, Doofus, Daisy, Klutz, and Clover," she said, pointing to the four piglets in turn.

A nodded gravely at each one in turn. "They look like very fine small pigs. And you take care of them?"

She beamed. "Yes. No one else was, and I like pigs. I'll have to find a bigger place to keep them soon, though." The house elves were very good about cleaning up after them, but her dormitory really wasn't the best place to keep livestock.

"I am glad my room is big enough for Schrodinger and I, but sometimes she needs more room to play. That's why we're down here."

Clover ventured around Petulia's legs toward Schrodinger; the girl held onto the piglet's collar but let her come nose to nose with the kitten. "I'm sure she likes being able to explore. Kittens are, um, kind of like human children like that."

A thought of his own childhood. There hadn't been much exploring, unless you counted books.

"She is very curious. I have to watch her carefully, or she could get lost."

"Um, you seem to be doing a good job," Petulia said. She thought for a moment, and then added, "Maybe you could get a collar for her? Then if she did wander off and someone found her, they'd know who to bring her back to. That's what I did for these four." She turned Clover's collar around so that A could see the small metal tag, which said
"Clover
Petulia Gristle,
Hufflepuff"

"That could be a good thing," A said softly, "As long as the collar didn't hurt her." He stroked Schrodinger's small white neck. "We're in the same house."

"It won't, as long as it's big enough. If you get one with enough holes for the buckle, you could keep loosening it as she grows."

"I will, then. I'll look for one." He scritched Schrodinger under her chin, and was rewarded with a startlingly loud purr. "It will help keep her safe."
