'You,' Rose informs him, 'Frown a lot. Your face will stick like that if you're not careful.'

Gwendal's frown deepened. "I have many serious duties. The Maoh," he stops before he says something negative about his Maoh, "entrusts me with many of these."

Rose frowns, too. Then she speaks with her face still in the expression.

'It's not making me feel more serious. It's just giving me a headache.'

"You are young." He won't admit that he has a headache more often than not. It's why he took up knitting. His thumbs rub against his index fingers, searching for the needles and yarn. "Young people do not need to be serious.

Rose folds her arms. 'No. We do sometimes. We just don't like it. I like the cat toy.'

Gwendal crouches awkwardly. "Here, then. You should have one." He pulls another toy out of his pockets. Though children make him feel painfully awkward, he does like them. And, she knew it was a cat.

It's not fantastic, but one of Rose's pet peeves is people denigrating her art because of who she is. (Young and quirky.) Old and frowny people are still people. She turns it over in her hands.

'Is knitting hard?' It looks it.

"No, it is not hard. I find it...soothing. If I had needles and yarn, I could show you." He looks at the floor. "It is what I do to keep from being too serious."

Rose stands to attention. 'I have wool. I only use it for collages. Do you need any? I can share. And also I know where you can get knitting needles from.' Dr. Maturin had told her, before he had had to leave. (Dax left too. Rose is 'shipping them together, imagining them on an island somewhere and going swimming and winning limbo competitions through bamboozling the other participants.)

'The wool is multi-coloured.'

Gwendal manages a smile, which is to say he wasn't quite frowning. "That would be good. If you can get the yarn and needles, I will show you how to knit." Knitting would help off-set some of the weirdness of this place. "Multi-colored is fine if that is what there is."

Rose extends a small hand, a businesslike look on her face. 'Rose Casson. There are other colours. I like lots of them. What about you?'

Gwendal holds out his hand, taking the girl's hand in his. "Gwendal von Voltaire. And any color you like is fine." His frown fades a little more.

It is simpler, then, that he is her house. 'I will bring indigo, saffron, cadmium yellow and rose,' she says, naming her siblings. 'And scarlet.' Because Sarah wanted to be called that. 'And Gryffindor is where you should be.'

Gwendal nods, not quite sure about the Gryffindor meaning. "I will wait for you, then." Knitting would be good. It would help sooth him.
