The dog entered the Sorting Room first, followed by a leash, followed by a tall man in a black coat being dragged behind. "Six, knock it off!" the man said, with an accent somewhere between Noo Yawk and European. He let the leash slide from his hand and the dog took off to sniff out the corners off the room

Laura read through the application.

"Okay, I'll bite," she said, tone teasing. "Moonlight swims?"

He pulled his keys out of his pocket and held up an old one. "The Y's supposed to be closed at night," he said. "Unless you have a key."

"Ahaaa," she said appreciatively. "Are you this much of a lawless rebel about everything, or just moonlight swims?"

"Hey," he said defensively. "I'm a cop. Small rebellions."

"A cop, huh?" She smiled. "Traffic tickets, busting shoplifters, like that?"

"Homicide." He said it in a smug way, almost bragging. "NYPD."

Laura sobered abruptly. "Oh. Are you good at it? Solving homicides?"

"Very good." He noticed the change in her attitude. "Why?"

"Tells me how I should vote you, that's all," she says. "How long you been doing that?"

"This time? The last few years," he replied. "I've got a talent for it."

"Talent helps," she agreed. "Tell me, ever come across any really...umm...weird cases?"

That was the second time he'd been asked that. Besides the obvious castle problem he was having, something was up. "Okay, I need you to be more specific. It's not like playing Clue; I can't guess at the details." New York. Homicide. Of course he came across weird cases.

Her cheeks reddened. "Um. Ritualistic? Satanic maybe? I guess 'vicious' isn't really so unusual these days... Maybe, like, some weird poetry?"

Misguided goth kids, check. Actual satanists, check. He'd seen a few like that. Something a little more... mythical? That was personal experience. "Do you know more about the ritual?"

"Um. Not specifics so much." She bit her lip. "A circle with a fire in the middle. Something personal from the victim buried in the circle? Some writing. 'Fire walk with me.'"

"Not ringing any bells, sorry." His ritual had involved blood and chanting, but he was a bit hazy on the details.
