Lola was not the only person in the mood to burn clothes, actually.
May had been up for a while, and while she didn't remember everything that happened the night before - it had gotten really hazy towards the latter half of the night, which did not bode well - she remembered enough to send out several anonymous owls of apology, each bearing certain items that their owners might have been missing. They wouldn't have been anonymous if not for the secret identity, which she was trying to keep secret in spite of two more people figuring it out the previous nightThat finished, she had one more thing to eliminate - that damned black costume. She had no idea how it had gotten into her room, but it carried enough bad associations even without taking Halloween night into account. She couldn't simply throw it away - she had to burn it
( ... )
Lola blinked once or twice, and then smiled carefully. "Yeah. And you're... May. You're in the play, aren't you?" She was sure she'd seen the girl around, and Lola tried to make it a point to keep track of everyone's names.
She nodded, taking another piece of paper, which was nearly torn from the force of which it had been scrawled on, and tossed it on the flames before replying, "Yeah. Bad night. Weird night." There was a moment's pause. "You listened to the radio?" Of course, more people than Lola must have. She just hadn't seen any around, being much too busy with her moronic plans of world - or at least Hogwarts - domination.
May nodded, although the mention of the play made her grimace - it was related to the reason she'd gone after a certain person in the first place. "Yep, one line, but it counts."
She sat down in the unoccupied chair, watching the flames devour the piece of paper. "Yeah. I had to write a LOT of owls this morning." And that had only covered the people she knew she'd wronged. "Not expecting any replies." Partly because the owls had to be anonymous, partly because she'd done some pretty nasty stuff the previous night. There was still that hazy portion of memory, and some guy in blue armor she'd been trying to kill and she had no idea who that was.
The flash of memory made her clench the wadded spandex tighter, kneading it in her hands and nearly tearing it apart. "I don't remember everything that happened. There's this big chunk of the night that's fuzzy at best, and that really worries me. What I do remember... was pretty bad." She glanced over at Lola. "You too?"
Lola kept feeding the fire, nodding. "Me too. Well, two owls... And the people I hurt figured out I hadn't been myself, but, you know..." She shrugged. "Doesn't undo what I did." Nothing could. There'd be lots and lots of redemption, which she hadn't quite figured out how to do yet.
She saw the piece of fabric in May's hands, and then turned her eyes back to the fire, in case it wasn't something she was supposed to see. "Burning some of the things you did helps," she said evenly. "I wrote some stuff down... Stupid things. Like plans to take over the world..." Lola looked suitably embarrassed. "Anyway, it's being burned now. Don't let me hog the fire, in case you want to get rid of something, too."
Lola looked up. "There's the no-kill spell," she pointed out. "So... it can't be that bad, whatever you did. Nothing you can't do better."
The corners of May's mouth turned up a bit. "I'll see your two and raise you half a dozen, give or take," she replied, sighing at the figure - which was an estimate owing to the holes in her memory. "Still don't know who some of the people I gave a hard time to are. There was this one guy I got in a fight with - he was wearing a Mountie uniform, I don't know why - and I think he was under the radio spell too, but still, would be nice to make amends somehow." Anonymously, of course, she hadn't been holding back all that much on him
( ... )
Lola made a face. "Sorry. Guess I shouldn't be whining when I don't know what everyone else went through." But it had been going so well! And she'd ruined it. The frist time she'd seen Jaime in full armour, and she'd called him a freak. She was pretty sure that wasn't good. But she couldn't start worrying even more about that, just hope that he'd still talk to her after he'd rested.
She shook her head. "No. Sent them owls. They say I'm forgiven, but it would feel better to do it in person. So they'd know I really meant it, or something."
Another worthless plot was sacrificed to the purging fire. "That's because they're so stupid." Lola wrinkled her nose. "I couldn't think of any that would have worked. That's a good thing, though." Really. Her plans had been of the 'Take gummy bears, bring them to life and create a small, gummy army to TAKE OVER THE WORLD' variety. It was embarrassing.
She smiled when she saw May's suit burn, but it was a smile of grim satisfcation rather than joy. "It's just so meaningless. I mean, why turn a
( ... )
"You're not whining. Trust me, I know whining. I got put on set construction with Tomo the first try," May said, her smirk fading a bit; at least Tomo was okay and her usual loud self, but it could have been worse.
May snorted. "If they're your friends, they should know you meant it. Maybe they want you to know they mean it?" She watched the paper burn, smiling in spite of herself. "Guess so. Not having an aptitude to be evil is a good sign
( ... )
Lola smiled. It was a slightly weaker version of her usual sunny one, but at least it was a smile. She was no stranger to Tomo whining; the teenager had been doing some of that back when they were both married to Dwight
( ... )
((Sorry. Mom stuff and this lab just ate all my free time.))"Yeah, I know that now," May sighed, listening to Lola's story with sympathy. "I'm sorry. Bad enough having to go through that once." She didn't ask if Lola was okay, she knew the answer already
( ... )
"It's alright." Lola smiled a little. "It's better now."
She tapped her bottom lip thoughtfully. It would be nice to try and make up for it. Okay, so she had mostly hurt Jaime and Brenda, but she could have done more. Maybe she could... bake a lot of cookies and send them out? Only people here wouldn't trust any food items that were given to them for free by anyone but the House-elves (for good reason), so that would have been pointless. Still, something would be nice.
She looked up at May, grinning at the suggestion. "Tell you what," she said. "I go to my room and make us some hot chocolate, and bring it back here. And you can go and get us something to eat from the Great Hall." She sighed. "I could really use something insanely sugary." She twitched her nose, looking at the plastic bag. "Would you... mind, helping me with this? It's really satisfying to burn them."
The smile broadened at that. "I like the way you think." Wouldn't be too hard to obtain a plate of chocolate chip cookies without even having to bother a house elf.
She stood up. "Of course I don't mind. I hear you on the satisfying," she added, with one last glance at the charred lump that had been the black costume. "I'll be back with cookies in no time and we can get rid of every last bit of that." The contents of the plastic bag were so doomed.
