Annja Creed; Rogue Angel books

Oct 29, 2007 17:47

*Annja stares around the room in surprise, still holding her flashlight up in one hand and an open book in the other. Ok, this was not what she was supposed to find on this dig. One minute she'd been picking through a ruined castle, indeed, a -condemned- ruined castle in Scotland and the next she was... here. Now, admittedly, this certainly ( Read more... )

Jaime has to smile a bit at the answer to question #2. "Yeah, I didn't think annoying was an executable offense either. Wouldn't have put up with my little sister so long otherwise." He raised an eyebrow at the Hufflepuff answer. "Working on a TV show sounds kinda cool, but I'm guessing... not?"

*Annja chuckles* If annoying was executable, we'd all probably be dead by now.

*Her expression darkens briefly at the mention of the tv show and she sighs with a shrug* You know... I keep getting told that, and I have to admit, the ability to go to places I want to go is nice but honestly? It's really fairly un-cool much of the time. *She grins wryly to herself. Not that that was really the whole truth, and she was honest enough with herself to admit that a lot of her irritation came from her so-called "co-anchor" and not from the tv show itself... despite their tendency to want to edit her research*

He smirks. "Yeah, you're probably right. See? Told you so. Two of my friends wouldn't have made it outta middle school."

"Places? Like where? Hey, short of being dropped in here and a road trip to Kansas, I've spent most of my life around El Paso." Not counting the two trips to outer space, of course. But those weren't exactly planned.

*She looks vaguely confused* Told who so? *Annja glances around briefly, looking to see who else the kid could be talking to*

*She smiles as she answers his question* Well... I've been all over most of Europe and America, Japan, China, South America... El Paso, huh? Been through there, mostly I end up outside of cities though.

"Um." Dammit. He has to stop doing that. "Never mind. Long story."

"Cool." He nods. "Yeah, it's home. Been back and forth to Juarez a few times, but that's it. Friend of mine lives - uh, used to live there with her aunt." His smile faded a bit at that, so, subject change. "Outside of cities? You get to go on a lot of digs? This, uh, friend of my teacher's complained that she had to write too many papers when she'd rather go check out an actual dig."

Okay, Dani Garrett is not a friend of any of his teachers, but there's no way to explain how he knows that bugnuts archaeologist.

*She looks at him curiously but drops the subject, well aware of what it's like to have something you can't explain to anyone else. She notes the change of tone but doesn't press the kid about his friend, switching subjects with him*

*Smiling wryly, she nods* I know the feeling, though I must admit I do rather enjoy writing papers at times. But the research itself is always more interesting. So yeah, I try to go on as many digs as possible. It doesn't always work out but, I get to see my fair share.

He relaxes visibly when it's clear she's not going to press. One of the few good things about being in a place with so many "different" people is that they understand not asking about your own quirks.

"I don't get how writing papers is fun, but I'll take your word for it," he says, grinning. Hey, he's in high school. "You ever find anything cool on those digs?" he asks, curious in spite of himself and thinking back to the story of how the scarab was found. "Like ancient unique artifacts and stuff? Or is that just in the movies?"

*Annja grins and nods* Yeah, I have. A friend of mine discovered the grave of a viking called Thor, complete with hammer. Found a few other things, the apparent final resting place of the Beast of Gévaudan, for instance. It's probably not quite as ah, adventurous as in the movies but we do find things.
*Right... not adventurous. Except when I'm involved. she thinks resignedly*

"Hey, that is cool. The Beast of what?" He so isn't going to try to pronounce that. "That's for the show, right?"

He notices the look on her face and frowns, knowing that look way too well. "Not adventurous is usually better, huh." It's not a question.

The Beast of Gévaudan. A supposed monster that rampaged across France in the 1760's. Nearly 200 attacks are attributed to the Beast, including almost 100 dead. Yeah, I was looking into it for the show but I was interested in the story in it's own right. It's a fascinating legend.

*She nods slightly, smiling faintly at his comment* Usually is, yeah. *Annja studies him for a moment* Little young to know that, aren't you? *She's not trying to be patronizing, simply honest curiosity*

"Huh. Sounds like it. That kind of stuff what they want on the show, or do you get to pick too?"

His smile is bitter. "Yeah. Yeah, I am." His dad's words that last normal day keep coming back to haunt him: Nothing wrong with being just a kid for a little while longer. "Never really appreciated the quiet til the crazy became my life, I guess."

*Her smile turns wry* They do like that kind of thing, but I do get to pick sometimes, especially if I can dig up a story about a supposed monster even loosely associated with where I want to go. And I do get the occasional private hiring as well.

*She sobers at his insight and nods* Yeah... I know what you mean. *She thought about the sword. Not that it wasn't a good thing, she supposed, but sometimes having a destiny really just sucked*

"Monsters get the ratings, huh? Not a surprise. Not as long as reality TV is still all over the place." That was one of the few things he was disappointed to find hadn't changed after his missing year. "You're in the right place for Nessie stories, but I bet that's been done to death by now."

He smiles, understanding, and doesn't ask. Doesn't need to. "I'm Jaime, by the way."

*She laughs again and nods in agreement* Oh yeah, everyone loves a good werewolf or vampire story apparently. The bigger, scarier, and more deadly the monster the better. And yes, Nessie's not nearly the draw she used to be.

*Annja holds out a hand* Annja, pleased to meet you.

"Guess it's the season for it," Jaime observes, remembering that Halloween should be coming up soon. Here, anyway.

He shakes the offered hand. "Likewise. Anybody give you the 'not in Kansas anymore' speech yet?"

Yeah, I suppose it is. *She shakes her head* Not as such, no. I mean, I've gotten one odd mention of Houses, and a very short mention of learning magic but beyond that... not really.
