Reilly came into the Sorting Room and read the application just in time to catch the confrontation with Wired Lain.

"Well. That was interesting. I take it that would be why you have to 'lie all the time'?"

((I'm just going to pretend that Jaime shut the armor down before Reilly spoke up since I'm simultaneously tagging to Lain now.))

"What? ...wait, you saw that?" Jaime groans. "That does it. I hate my life. Like I said. The opposite of useful."

((Sure. I figure he's spoken up after that thread is finished, continuity-wise.))

Reilly shrugged one shoulder. "I make a point of identifying potential threats. I've been around long enough to know they're not always going to come from the obvious sources. Are you military?"

Identifying potential threats? Oh, that's not comforting. The scarab isn't spazzing that much about this guy, but Jaime doesn't exactly trust its judgement.

"Military? Me? Uhh, no. I'm still trying to survive high school." He shifts his weight uncomfortably, not sure where this is going. "Not looking to get drafted, either. I'm not - I'm not out to hurt anybody."

"You're wise to keep your - talent - a secret then. There will be those who would use it to their own ends, if you haven't met some of them already," he said.

"A bit of advice, with regard to question 5A? Never give anyone all your secrets. That would make you vulnerable, and your loved ones -"

Reilly winced, thinking of Anna. "It could cause them unnecessary pain."

((Checked with Sidney-mun, and will just pretend he said 5B.))

"I'm trying. In principle, it's simple, but in practice..." Jaime sighs. "Already met one of those. Lucky for me I had something on her." He has no intention of telling Brenda about her aunt, but her aunt doesn't know that. Although recent events have made him wonder if that's a good idea.

"5B? Which one was that again?" Jaime picks up a copy of the application, frowning again at the asides. "Oh. That one. You don't need to tell me that twice. Some secrets, though... not knowing can get people hurt."

He looks up from the application, noticing the wince. "Personal experience?"

((Sorry, I've been out dealing with crises all afternoon.))

"You have some talent for gamesmanship, then. Good. You're likely to need it."

Another, smaller wince. "Yes. Perhaps you'll find a happy medium between telling your people everything or nothing. I've never hit upon it, but hope springs eternal."

"And dumb luck. Can't forget dumb luck." Man, if La Dama had been anyone else, he'd have been screwed.

"So far, so good, I guess. Don't want to hurt any of my people, but some things you can't keep lying about."

"Can't forget that, no," he agreed. "You're an idealist, then?"

This guy is reminding him a lot of Peacemaker. Again with the not comforting.

"I'm sixteen," Jaime says. "I don't know, I'm just trying not to mess things up much more than I have already. I'd like to wait til I'm legal before I get totally cynical."

Reilly snorted. "It's been so many years since I've had the option of not being cynical, I've forgotten what it's like. If you lean more toward the practical, though, I believe I'll vote Hufflepuff. If nothing else, your more everyday talents certainly qualify you as useful and hardworking."
