I was halfway out into the middle of nowhere, the window cranked down letting both the faint breeze that could be stirred up in the late-afternoon heat and copious amounts of dust in. Humming Takata's latest song - the hunk of junk I'd bought for a hundred bucks didn't have a/c, and it sure as hell didn't have a radio - providing my own drums on the steering wheel, I tried to feel as carefree as I looked.

Not exactly working.

I nearly ran down the freaking owl; damn thing fluttered in front of the windshield and almost made me run off the road. But I managed to pull over, and, leaning against the side of the van, I read Ivy's letter.

It was probably a good thing I was miles from civilization. Also that my dear pal Al was holed up at Hogwarts. Because tapping that ley line and sending a tree flying in an earth-shaking explosion? Probably would have drawn all kinds of the wrong attention.

Seething, pushing both my hands through hair that hung limp and damp from sweat and about a thousand pounds of dust, I twisted it up into a messy knot to get it out of my way. And then, oh by the love of the Turn, and then, I replied to Ivy's letter.

With interest.

After watching the bird fly away, I climbed back into the van and headed out to where I knew my mark would be once the sun went down. I'd almost turned back twice, now - this run was dangerous and quite possibly out of my reach - but Ivy and her blase blood-saited attitude had just made me want to hurt something as much as physically possible.

A non-living vampire sounded just perfect.

Tamwood,

Sorry. Must have missed that edition. Since I still have my free will and am damn sure going to keep it.

I hate you when you're like this

Why the hell do you think that'd be funny

Is that what you want me to be?

I'm not coming back

I'm glad that we didn't

Good to know that all that needs to happen to get you in such a fucking jolly mood is for you to drain some poor sucker dry and for me to leave you the hell alone. Well, if it ain't broke, right?
