"So... if you just got elected to Congress, why come here?" May asked, curious. "Assuming you meant to and didn't just walk out of your office and find yourself here?"

"Ah, no. Actually... hunting down my," pain in the ass, "brother. Peter Petrelli, you know him?" Since he'd, you know. Exploded and then disappeared off the face of the damn planet. But that... Yeah, he would leave that part out for the time being, thanks very much.

Peter? No, couldn't be. Could it? May frowned thoughtfully. "I know a guy named Peter, he just showed up here," she said honestly. She hadn't gotten Peter's last name. "Couldn't be, unless, um..." She lowered her voice slightly. "Does he have a really, really good immune system? And kind of need a haircut?"

Yeah, that was vague, but she doubted this guy would appreciate her saying something like So is he the one that came here on fire and re-grew most of his body back? And actually, Peter's floppy hair was kind of cute, but this guy didn't need to hear that.

Just showed up? That would probably be him. Peter had disappeared right after he'd... well, blown up. Couple days ago. But... huh? Nathan paused, furrowing his eyebrows as his hands crossed to each of his hips in a s00per!Nathanrather authoritative pose. Good immune system? Was she talking about...? Jesus, just what the hell had people been telling people here? Great big dreamer; he was going to get himself killed.

"Haircut?" he repeated nonetheless, cracking a bit of a wry smile and trying to skip over the first half of her comment. "Oh, yeah. Sounds like my brother. Floppy hair, hanging in his eyes." Right? Please say it was Peter. Nathan'd already seen him die once - that was more than enough trauma for his life, thank you very much.

Oh yeah. Between the double-take at the immune system comment, the immediate recognition of Peter's hair and the massive coincidence that was Hogwarts himself, May was pretty sure they were talking about the same Peter. "Yeah, that sounds like him. Kind of wonder how he manages to see sometimes. He said he used to be a hospice nurse." She glanced around the Sorting Room. "Actually, he should still be in here somewhere. Hasn't been Sorted yet, and you can't leave here til you're Sorted, period."

The look Nathan got on his face at her first comment was almost the exact same look Dad gave her when he found out Felicity knew her secret identity - without the immediate facepalming afterwards. "Um, he was in really bad shape when he appeared in here," she added. "He got better right in front of anybody. It's not like he went around blathering anything that wasn't immediately obvious to anyone."

Nathan smirked a bit at the mention, scratching at his ear and raising an eyebrow. "Yeah, a hospice nurse." Which Nathan had teased him endlessly for. Lots of woman jokes. He'd bought the guy orthopedic shoes by some kind of celebratory means, for God's sake. With everything going on lately, though? Nathan was kind of missing the quiet, hospice nurse life Peter had had going on for him. "Saving the world one person at a time, he used to call it."

...Wait, huh? "Sorted?" Nathan shifted from foot to foot, fixing May with a bit of a narrow-eyed expression. "What do you mean 'Sorted'?" Whoa, whoa, whoa, he wasn't staying here.

Really bad shape. Of course. He would've been in pieces after the explosion, charred and disfigured and... God, Nathan had thought he would have never made it. Prayed he would have, but fairly sure he wasn't going to make it. "Rapid cell regeneration," he muttered to himself, exhaling sharply and half-glancing around the room. Okay, so maybe he wasn't going on about what he could do. ...Then again, it WAS Peter ( ... )

"Hey, whatever works," May said with a smile. "One person at a time's a lot better than not helping anyone."

Oh, yeah. Better lay it all out on the table. "Okay, here's how it works," May said, pausing to take a swig of the water bottle she was still holding. "Everybody who arrives here has to be Sorted - assigned to a House - before they can even leave this room. No exceptions. However," she added before he could protest, "once you get Sorted, you can apparently come and go as you please. Well, if you can afford a plane ticket back to the States," she added ruefully, her Queens accent becoming a bit more obvious. "Unless you get Squibbed - totally rejected - then I don't think you can ever set foot here again. Never seen anyone who's Squibbed try again, anyway."

She took another drink of water after that explanation and had to pause significantly to keep herself from choking when she heard Nathan's last question. "A lot," she managed when she could speak properly again. "For starters, this is a magic school - and yeah, I know it ( ... )

They had to what now? "So what, you just show up at this place and they lock you in?" he replied, a bit disturbed, furrowing his eyebrows. What... a weird place. Okay. At least getting back to the States wasn't exactly a problem, at least, for someone who could just fly there, but the whole locking him in here until he was sorted thing was... less than appealing. "So I either get voted into this place and stay... or I get kicked out and can't ever come back," or see Peter, "again?"

A lot. Peter wasn't kidding. And God only knew what else was at this school. Just in his family alone, they had the indestructible girl, the flying politician and the human sponge. That wasn't even touching in on Sylar, or Hiro Nakamura, or Isaac Mendez. It looked like powers didn't have an end, so far as they stretched. "Magic school, yeah, I heard that," he added with a sigh, rubbing at the back of his neck. "Just... Wow, really not in New York anymore, am I?"

"I don't get it either," May sighed, shrugging. "I mean, people have shown up here injured a couple times, but they usually bring in a doctor if that's the case. There's plenty of them in Ravenclaw. And like I said, you don't HAVE to stay - I guess even if you want visitation rights you have to be Sorted."

She smiled wryly at his last comment. "Not in Kansas either. It helps to keep a running tally of the not-crazy people you meet and keep in touch with them. You want the lowdown on the Houses before I vote you somewhere and you can go find your brother?"

Nathan paused a beat, then two. "Really." He could barely believe it. The hell? This was practically kidnapping. Not particularly, sure, but forcing people to be sorted before they could do anything else in here? Definitely not in Kansas anymore. Damn, and he'd just wanted to find Peter.

He couldn't help but give her a smirk back, scratching at the back of his head. "'Not-crazy' is a little hard to come by here," he replied dryly, raising eyebrows at May. After all, even his own brother was teetering off that edge. "But, yeah, a summary sounds pretty great right about now." For once, he had no grasp on just what the hell he was doing.
