Open RP: Silas is Looooossst.

Apr 12, 2007 18:35

All right, Silas was used to massive cathedrals and the rambling corridors of the Opus Dei center in New York, but Hogwarts dwarfed them all in both size and sheer confusion. He'd found Ravenclaw all right, the night before, but now that he was attemtping to go anywhere else, he found himself hopelessly lost in a corridor that looked, well, like ( Read more... )

*Erk is startled to turn a corner and run into a man in a vaguely familiar outfit.* Those robes... You're not an Elimine monk, by any chance, are you?

"Elimine? No, I belong to the Opus Dei. I have never heard of an Elimine order--where are they from?" Judging by the man's dress and unusual hair, he might well be from some other world. The idea of other worlds was still horribly jarring, but not so much as it once might have been.

Etruria, mostly, although I'm fairly certain there's at least one monastery in the Lycian League, probably in Ostia. Serra must have wanted to go there for a reason, after all...

*Erk stops.* Forgive me; I simply asked on the off chance you were from Elibe. I am Erk.

The names sounded wholly unfamiliar--they must indeed be from some other world. "Pleased to meet you, Monsieur Erk--I am Silas. Where is Etruria, if I might ask?"

Well, it's... The directions have little meaning, here, of course, but it's in the center of the northern part of Elibe... North of the Lycian League, west of Illia and the Sacae plains. May I ask where the Opus Dei come from?

"Our order was founded in Spain, but has spread throughout the world. I joined in Spain as a younger man, and moved to New York City in America." He'd never heard any of these names, though his knowledge of geography was admittedly sketchy at best.

*Erk wracks his brains, trying to remember if he's ever heard any of these names.* I... think I saw a few of those names in an atlas in the Library. America is across the sea from here, right?

"It is. It's an enormous country, but I was on the coast nearest Britain and Europe. I...was brought back, to perform a certain task, which killed me, and then I was here." He didn't think he'd ever get over the strangeness of that. "What sort of order is the Elimine?"

*Erk has a sneaking suspicion about the answer to the next question, but he asks anyway.* Brought back from where?

Some of them stay in monasteries, some of them wander the land helping people; I've never quite figured out if there's a rule governing who does what. It was founded a thousand years ago by Saint Elimine. Saint Elimine was one of the heroes of the Scouring; she also founded the country of Etruria. Generally, the lower-ranked members are divided into two groups. Many use enchanted staves, while some male members instead become monks, who can utilize light magic.

That sounded much like the orders here, except for the magic.

"I died," he said. "I died, and then I was here. It seems that is fairly common, in this place.

"The monks you speak of sound very much like many of the orders here--the only real difference is the magic. The Church has always taught that magic--and those who practice it--are evil. It wasn't until I came here that I...revised my opinion. There is more to the world than I or the Church ever expected it seems. I have heard of no Saint Elimine, or a Scourge--none of those are of this world, I think. There have been many things that might be called a Scourge, in the last few thousand years, though as far as I know none of them have been named such."

Sounds like the reputation elder magic - dark magic - has acquired in Elibe. Probably nonsense; the only user of dark magic I've gotten to know was one of the most well-adjusted people I'd met in a great while.

The Scouring was a war in which dragons were driven from Elibe into an adjoining world by the Eight Legends, although I'm beginning to question why it happened. Nevertheless, Saint Elimine's clergy are undoubtedly a force for good, even if the company of certain members is... less than pleasant.

Dragons? Yet more legends come to life, it seemed.

Silas laughed quietly. There were certain members even of his order of whom the same might be said--good men of God, whose presence was nevertheless uncomfortable. "The good magic of your world might not be so different from our saints," he said. "They are people who, in the past, performed miracles. When we have a particular problem, we pray to a certain saint to intercede for us with God."

*Erk has a fleeting vision of someone praying to Lucius or Serra, and smiles slightly.* They certainly sound similar. I'm not that well versed in that form of magic, I'm afraid.

"We don't think of it so much as magic, though I suppose miracles could be considered a form of magic. Ultimately, it all comes down from God--He is the one with all the power, and grants it to his saints." And, apparently, all kinds of other people, most of whom seemed to be here.

*Erk considers this for a moment.* I've heard worse philosophies recently.

"I should think there are, here." Silas frowned, thinking of one of the people he had met at his Sorting. "I'm afraid not everyone in this place is a good person." He didn't know about the Rule--if he had, he'd be much less worried about people like Damien Thorn.
