Jon Snow - A Song Of Ice And Fire

Dec 01, 2006 04:07

When he steps into the sorting room, he takes a minute to kick mud and snow off the bottoms of his boots. He isn't certain where he's ended, but he is certain it doesn't do well to start by ruining someone's floor. The pause makes the wolf at his side stop, as well; he pauses to rest a hand on it's head, and they look at one another for a moment ( Read more... )

"Jon!" she shrieked, launching herself at him. "I never thought I'd see you again!"

The shriek gets his attention, all right, and his hand's at his sword before he can think, much less see her. But when he whirls to face her, he absolutely freezes. "... Arya?" The shock only lasts a second before he wraps her in his arms, almost laughing. "I'd thought you were long lost."

She giggled, pleased. "They never caught me for very long. I think I need to thank you even more for Needle."

He squeezed her once more for good measure before letting go. "You learned how to use it well, then? I'm glad." He looks her over carefully. "I hadn't thought when I found you that you'd have grown."

Tyrion enters the sorting room, as has become his habit, to see what new amusing applicants there might be. He stops when he notices John, and then smiles wryly. "The wall certainly seems to have made a man of you, John Snow," he remarks.

His eyes grow easy and he nods, and bows; not mocking, but certainly a joke. "Tyrion Lannister. The world has hardly touched you at all."

Tyrion grins. "I imagine you'll be wondering what I do to keep these stunning good looks. Oh and I'm sorry to have inflicted Janos Slint on you u. I just figured... better him there than where I would feel the need to eviscerate him with a dull knife."

"We have ways of dealing with the 'inflicted' on the Wall." His eyes almost sparkle, mischevious. "You are forgiven, as it is. Next time, my generosity will be less."

Sansa was not far behind her husband. Not by design, of course, but she wasn't terribly good at studying, and exploring the castle school rarely ended except with a usually-brief visit to the Sorting Room.

The sight of Jon Snow made her pause briefly. He would surely have heard of her marriage and Joffrey's death, surely, if she had heard in the Vale of his becoming Lord Commander. It was strange, really - all her brothers but Jon dead, Arya wild, she herself nothing more than a piece on a gameboard representing the North. Jon had done the best of them all, with the least, in those lights.

She shook her head slightly and approached Jon with a smile. "It's good to see you again, Jon."

He held out a hand to her. "And you." She looked good, at least; it all agreed with her. "I suppose what I ought to say is congratulations. It doesn't seem as fitting as 'how are you'."

If her smile was perhaps a little tight, well... only someone who'd been watching her carefully in the early days at King's Landing would have been able to tell. "I'm well." Well enough, and she could certainly be worse. That was the best she could hope for. "And I certainly owe you congratulations. I had heard before now that you were elected Lord Commander of the Watch," Myranda Royce hadn't known Jon's name, but Sansa had, "but news is sometimes unreliable, so I wasn't sure until now."

"Well and glad for it?" He was watching her carefully. They'd never been close, but while he had means he'd defend his family. "Thank you. Luck and politics played no small part," he said, "or so I am told by some."

Laura stops at the door to admire the wolf. He growls a warning at first, but she kneels and holds her ground, and a few words from the treecat on her shoulder calm him, though he remains wary and alert.

She looks inside, and sees the Stark sisters and Tyrion Lannister in animated - and apparently not unpleasant, thank God - conversation with the newcomer. Another from their homeland?

"May I come in?" she calls from the door.

She's not armed, but with women that's no guarantee. Jon nods, though, and calls back, "if you come in peace, I see no harm."

"I do, sir, and I think Arya and Sansa may vouch for me." She waves a goodbye to the wolf, stands and walks in.

"Hi. I'm Laura, and this is Galahad, a treecat. That's a really beautiful wolf you've got there." She smiles. "You're from the same place Arya and Sansa are? And the Lannisters - well, no, probably not quite the same as the Lannisters, we're thinking."

"No. Not at all the same as the Lannisters. I am Lord Commander Jon Snow, of the Night's Watch. And if my sisters vouch for you, and Ghost as well," he gestures to the wolf at the door, "I've trusted with less."

Stephen sized up the newcomer.

"You seem competent."

It was high praise.

His lips quirk with something like amusement. "It happens," he says, mock-apologetic, and bows, slightly. "Lord Commander Jon Snow. You are?"

Stephen returns the bow, no more deeply and no more slightly. "I have the honor and misfortune of serving as potions master here. Doctor Stephen Maturin, at your service."

"A pleasure, Master Maturin." He nodded -- enough of the school had been explained that he understood it. "I hope you'll find me an apt pupil."
