Jill, from Katherine Kerr's Deverry books

Nov 26, 2006 07:52

A young woman with short blonde hair walks in, stops, and looks around in surprise. She is wearing worn baggy trousers, a slightly stained linen shirt, boots, and a swordbelt from which hang a sword and a silver dagger.

Small things amuse certain people, and Jilly noticed right away that this applicant shared her name. She made her way over, smiling in her usual cheerful way.

"Hi! I'm a Jill, too... Well, Jilly actually, but I suppose it's all the same. The Wildfolk... Are they like pixies or hobbs?" Then she noticed the gnome. "Awww, he's cute!" she gushed.

OOC: Ahhh, books I've actually read. Squee!

"Hello, Jilly," Jill says, smiling back. "That's got to be the first time I've heard a gnome called 'cute.'" Her grey gnome looks up at her and sticks his tongue out, then gives Jilly a big grin, showing off his mouthful of pointed teeth. "I don't know what pixies or hobbs are, sorry, so I don't know if they're like Wildfolk. This one's a gnome, and you also get sprites, sylphs, salamanders and undines. They're wold and pesky." She gives her gnome a mock frown, then smiles. "But very loyal."

Jilly nodded. "I've never seen a gnome until now, and I've only ever read about the other things you mention. How'd you come to have this little guy with you?"

"Not many can see the Wildfolk. Well, not many humans, anyway, the Westfolk all can. But that's because that as humans grow up they tend to stop believeing in the Wildfolk, while the elder brothers always know you're there, isn't that right?" She addresses this last to the gnome, who claps his hands in agreement. Jill looks back up at Jilly and smiles. "He's been my friend ever since I was a little lass. When Da came and took me with him after Mam died, I thought I'd lost my friend, but he followed along with us. He's stayed with me ever since."

Jilly nodded slowly. "That's how the similar creatures we've got back home work. They're there, but not everyone can see them. At least this one stayed with you. Does he have a name?"

"No." Jill shakes her head, the gnome imitating her. "Only their Kings have names, but I haven't learned what they are yet. Do the ones where you come from have names?"

"The ones I've met do," Jilly answered. "Although I don't know if they use their real names or not. Then again, the fey folk where I come from tend to talk, and your little guy doesn't seem to." She was enjoying this rather a lot.

"So have they explained the houses to you yet?" she asked, changing gears. "And if they have, do you have a preference?" She was still new to this whole sorting business herself.

"No, Wildfolk can't talk," Jill says. "Their Kings can, and I think their highest-ranking lords, but ordinary Wildfolk like this one aren't quite bright enough for speech. They can understand it, though." The grey gnome nods vigourously at this.

"Brienne told me Houses were living areas, and Laura gave me a quick description of each," she continues. "And one of the men I've been talking to told me a little more about Ravenclaw. He thinks I'd fit there because of my studies, see. Laura and Brienne both thought I'd fit Gryffindor. I'm not truly sure if I have a preference, other than not Slytherin. Cunning isn't something I'd describe myself as."

"Ravenclaw's my house, too," Jilly said. "I think you might fit there pretty well. Besides, I love the gnome, so I'd probably vote you into my house on the strength of that alone."

Jill laughs, while the gnome vanishes and then rematerialises on Jilly's shoulder, giving her a hug.

"Do these decisions often come down to odd things like that?" she asks.

Jilly beamed at the gnome, quite obviously charmed. "I don't know," she admitted. "I suspect mine do, though. The last person I sorted I flipped a coin for. I suppose I'll get the knack for it eventually, but for right now, I figure I have license to be random if I want."

Jill shook her head. "You remind me of a friend of mine. He's a gerthddyn, and you two seem to have a similar kind of outlook on life."

A younger, female, Salamander. Oh, ye gods. Save her. Which her is up to you.

((OOC: Let's try this again, with the right journal this time. *is the queen ditz of Ditzville today*))

"What's a gerthddyn?" Jilly wanted to know. She grinned a bit self-depricatingly. "Yeah... People have told me I'm a bit too perky and odd for my own good."

(OO: *laughs* NP, I have so done that before.)

"A gerddthyn is a wandering entertainer," Jill explains. "Kind of like a bard, but instead of serving a lord, knowing bardlore and the rest, gerddthyn's travel around and they...well, Salamander, at least," she gives a long-suffering sigh, "put on all sorts of shows. Juggling scarfs, pretending to perform dweomer...except Salamander actually does, and just pretends he's pretending," another sigh, "that sort of thing."

"Ahh. Sounds a bit like my friend Geordie back home, actually. Only he doesn't wander the countryside or anything. But he is a street performer. People tell him he should go pro, but he likes the music too much to do that."
