And Some Have Greatness Thrust Upon Them

Written by Blaise Zabini

When the times get tough, the tough get going. Adversity brings out the best in people. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them. So state various adages, all referring to more or less the same principle.

In the last month, the school and surrounding area has been the unfortunate setting for a widespread epidemic that effectually took many of the authority figures, the "responsible people", thereby forcing lesser beings such as yours truly into positions of authority and, dare I say it, accountability. Now really, anyone in their right minds, or at least given any other choice, would not have put the likes of Tracey Davis on such a task as Prefect Patrol. But shockingly or not, no one died.

No, this article is not meant as an insult to a girl whom, really, I do consider a good friend. The true point of this is that in the event of necessity, most people will find it in themselves to continue on, take on more duties, do what needs to be done... and even act serious once in a while. Perhaps not quite as successfully as those accustomed to and suited for these positions of responsibility, but for anyone with the strength of will, they will adapt to unexpected circumstances and do their best to deal with whatever life throws at them.

For this, I do commend all those who had greatness thrust upon them, as the saying goes. However well or ill you handled your unexpected new duties, the point remains that you tried your best, for the most part.

And taking on that added responsibility, in the face of NEWTs, OWLs and other exams, a play to be performed in just a few days, Quidditch games, revision, rampant house rivalries AND due dates for this humble paper, is almost to the level of achieving greatness.
