for elevenwho: It can only go downhill from here

They'd nicked his wallet.

They'd nicked his wallet.

Ianto was not pleased. He was very, very not pleased. He'd seen them coming, the little band of kids. The oldest couldn't have been over sixteen, and what's worse, they looked a lot like the sort of group he'd have been mixed up with at that age. Not that he'd ever nicked any wallets, of course ( Read more... )

Of course the day could get worse! It could always get worse.

Unless it got better.

And with that, the Doctor turned the corner from the other side, bumping quite soundly into Ianto. "Oh, hello."

It wasn't that he skulked around Cardiff looking to bump into people. Particularly sharply dressed - hey, this man looked familiar. "We've met!"

But... when? And why? And - "Ianto Jones! Not of the Martha Joneses! Or the Harriet Joneses! Well, we finally meet properly! Fancy that. Me here, today, you here today. Both of us here! Today!."

The Doctor at his ear thoughtfully. "Out of curiosity, what day is today?"

First things first, Ianto checked for his wallet.

Which wasn't there. Right.

He breathed in to calm himself and took a good look at the person who'd bumped into him. An oddly-dressed odd man who knew his name, knew Martha Jones, and had no idea what day it was.

Oh. Oh, it figured.

Ianto rubbed at his forehead.

"Hello Doctor," he said, a bit muffled.

The Doctor's eyes followed Ianto's hands. "Have you lost your wallet?"

Well, no time for that. "No time for that! Things to do, Ianto Jones. Ianto Ianto yannnnto." The Doctor smiled and canted his head to the side. "Feel like saving the planet?"

"No," Ianto answered that first question sharply but a little slowly. Apparently he still hadn't quite got past the sting of being pick-pocketed.

He slid his hands into his pockets and looked the Doctor over.

Saving the planet?

"Do it often enough," he said, trying his best to to appear unfazed. And then he lifted his chin, all business, or some approximation. "What now?"

"Where'd it get to, then? You haven't got it on you. Unless it's one of those slimming wallets. But it's only the twenty-first century, you haven't got one of those." He crossed his arms over his chest and leaned back, eyes narrowed.

"Oh, do you? Wellll, if you're busy not losing your wallet, and you've just saved the world a bit much lately," the Doctor waved a hand around. "Don't let me keep you."

"It was stolen," Ianto said, a touch annoyed, a touch exasperated.

There. He said it. And his dignity was still intact. Mostly.

He tilts his head to one side and his eyes go with it. An expression of thought, of consideration. As if there were really something to think over.

"Suppose I can spare a few minutes," he concluded finally.

The Doctor pat Ianto on the shoulder. "Happened to me once. I was two hundred, never been to Earth before. Do not go to Brooklyn in 1973, Ianto. Just do not."

He pulled his arm back and clapped his hands excitedly. "Perfect! Few minutes are all I need. Just a quick run to -" The Doctor was interrupted by a large object flying low overhead, towards the Bay. "That way!"

As the object flew overheard, Ianto followed it with his eyes.

Then he mouthed a few very family-unfriendly words.

They couldn't even hope that no one had noticed that. Already several people around him were talking excitedly and motioning toward the sky.

Ianto knew he should get out his phone and contact the others, but he didn't.

He did exactly what the Doctor did. He ran.

At Ianto's words, the Doctor turned and looked at Ianto. "Well said, Mr. Jones!"

He laughed and kept running. "So, what's it look like to you? Alien? American?" Another laugh. "French?"

"French," he answered, without turning toward the Doctor. Sarcasm tended to be a bit hard to manage while running, but luckily Ianto was quite good at both.

Ianto turned a corner, making a sharp right, and in front of them he could see a crowd gathering.
