"Where am I?" he asked the-- rather pretty, come to think of it-- woman who was leaning over him and shining a penlight into his eyes.
"You're at the A&E," she said, her voice calm, as she motioned to someone he couldn't see. He tried to crane his neck, but stopped when she turned her attention back to him and smiled. "But you're going to be all right. Can you tell me your name?"
He scrunched up his forehead in thought, even though the question should have been simple. He remembered the screech of tires, and a crash, and then... For a moment, everything seemed to blur. Shaking his head seemed to make it worse.
When his vision cleared, she wasn't smiling so much anymore. "Uh," he managed, as he tried to remember the question, "Ianto."
"Hello, Ianto. I'm Dr. Russell. What's your last name?"
"Hi." He breathed in, and found that the air tasted of anti-septic, harsh and clinical and offensively clean, and a the faintest trace of cigarette smoke. "Jones. Why...?"
She touched the side of his forehead, her fingers probing and smoothing. When it felt off, he realized that there was a bandage there, and that she was pressing down on the tape that held it in place. There was no pain, other than an ache, and he wondered if he was injured after all.
"Well," said Dr. Russell, just warmly enough that he told himself not to be worried, "Someone took a wrong turn and drove into your bicycle. And you, unfortunately. You were very lucky."
Ianto tried to give her his best are you kidding me? expression. He was seventeen, so he'd had a lot of practice in the past few years. Although this time he was groggy and injured, some of the intent must have come through, because she understood.
"Really, you were. I've had to give you some stitches, and there's a few bruises here and there, but nothing's broken."
"Except my bike," he couldn't help but quip, even if his voice was tired and somewhat lifeless.
She smiled uncertainly, showing her teeth, and then after a second she laughed.
