Being an EMT does not require math...at all. I really don't consider it a "hard" profession so to speak. There is a lot to know about though, i.e. patiet assessment, the different types of shock, what to do with the patient in certain situations, how to stay safe on a scene and legally, oxygen therapy, childbirth, ect. I love the excitement of the job. Things are fast paced (except for when people aren't getting effed up then you just get to kick back and get paid for waiting for someone to get hurt). The first thing that you need to to it get your basic first aid and cpr out of the way. I don't know how exposed you are to that kind of thing but everything is just simple knowledge. From there you need to get your advanced CPR or first responder and THEN you can take the EMT course. It is not a class that you can just skimp by either. You have to do the work, if you get below I think its either a 75 or 80% then you can't become an EMT. Well just becase think about it, would you want to be in someone's care who only received a 60% in the class?? Probably not. There is a little bit of Anatomy in becoming an EMT but its nothing to extensive. If you are going to go on to become a paramedic then you need to know a lot about the body, drugs, effects of drugs on the body, all kinds of different stuff. I almost have my EMS degree (check this website for the classes you need http://columbia.yosemite.cc.ca.us/05-06Catalog/AS/EMS.htm) I just need physiology. If you have any more questions to ask me or there is anything that I left out just let me know.
