It was like being in school- a little friend pimpage.
Last night, I went to the first public reading of my playwright friend Jason's work in progress, The Beautiful Rose, which was followed by what can only be termed a meta session in which we all attempted to analyze and pick apart his script. Heh. It was like being in school.
In truth, though, he has written a wonderful and original plot with characters who are complex and believable. I was particularly impressed with how he handled the ten year old central character of the play, Crystal, who came across as a real, honest-to-goodness ten year old kid- not overly knowing or precocious or wise. He also has the beginnings of an interesting character arc for Crystal's aunt and guardian, Melissa- an immature, self-absorbed adult (and God knows, there's an over-population of those in this world) who gradually comes to understand what she's denying her niece through her selfishness. It is a pro-family and slightly spiritual story, which may or may not put off some, but Jason never beats you over the head with it, which is something to his credit. It is also a profoundly positive, life-affirming, and often funny script, which, in my observation, is not very common in these "post-modern" days.
Jason is at the stage now where he's looking at the possibility of getting his baby produced. I know a few of you out there are also involved in the theater, so: If you're looking for a good, family-friendly show with an element of mystery and Divine Providence, I think I might have something for you. *g*
