Jack White // Moscow 01.10.2018

Nov 04, 2018 00:01

After some events you’re overwhelmed with emotions and have a wish to open the window and cry about it. But we’re civilized people, why the window if we have social networks? Right after a concert I wrote a short message on my Fb page, but next day I understood that it’s not enough. I need not only to whoop about what I feel but to go to an imaginary stage - write an article in my blog. Right now when I remember everything. And I know that it will be interesting even for me - read it after a time.
Crazy russians has already filled the whole first row at 18-30. Actually I was surprised, because in Amsterdam we had no problems with places in the first row in the same time. Seemed like those people came in an hour earlier than me.
At Moscow show we had no Yondr pockets so the ban of mobile phones was only in words. The day before I read in some communities on Fb some messages like “poor Jack, everybody will use their phones and make photos”. But thanks to my phone - it helped me to spend the waiting time, I was alone and the time went very slowly.
As people were pouring in, I got neighbors. Company of a brother and a sister and their friend was the best. Seemed like they were the only fans of the opening band. They were also talking about some casual stuff, Jack’s previous shows, wondering what the light would be like, would there be back-vocal or not and so on.
I knew the answers to some of their questions, but decided not to make spoilers. Honestly, at some moment I couldn’t resist and got into a conversation. We had a small talk about Jack and his shows. Guys were yesterday's schoolchildren and I called them so.
The opening band came on the stage, “schoolchildren” started to scream and I began wondering, who do they remind me of? The Band name was “Kazuskoma” and they were some mix of “Guns and Roses” and “Metallica”, including their appearance. Longhaired 80s. The lyrics and the vocal sucked in my opinion. They needed stronger voices to pull off such appearance. So, I felt bewilderment.
To my regret, we didn’t have that amazing countdown before the main show. But we had our own “countdown” based on the amount of technicians on stage: the fewer they were, the sooner was the beginning of the show.
Finally, everything was ready, microphones cleaned, crowd reached rock bottom and at this moment…
musicians came on stage. Crowd burst into applause, but it was nothing in comparison to what happened when Jack came. Seemed like it was 1963 and The Beatles on stage.
The show started traditionally - with “Over and Over and Over”. We made a flashmob - waved the sheets with word “OVER” on it. And everybody were singing along so loudly as if our lives depended of it. If the following song was “Lazaretto”, I would have immediately lost my voice. But the next one was “Corporation” and we could take some rest.
To play “Lazaretto” and “Black math” in a row was quite hard. I liked both of them so much that I almost died of joy, and not only me. It seemed that hands would never come down , and the crowd was singing alone every song. It was especially great during “We’re going to be friends”- Jack let us sing some pieces on our own and smiled. It was exactly the same as on Youtube videos which I had watched years ago and envied.
Amazingly that there was “Humoresque” in the set-list. Maybe Jack sang it to let us take a rest. But we did not. We instantly raised our hands up and started to wave in rhythm. It was very soulful.
The main part finished with “Steady as she goes”. I think, it seemed great from the stage - when the whole crowd was jumping together as a unit. And it was an incredible experience - to be inside that crazy crowd.

Musicians left the stage to take a rest before the encore, but we did not rest. It was really great that we together were like one person: somebody started to sing a melody of “Seven Nation Army” and everybody joined in immediately. Then - we just yelled “JACK WHITE - JACK WHITE”. And so on, without stopping , the crowd did not subside for a moment. When we couldn’t sing, we just clapped our hands. Again, like at the beginning, musicians came right at the moment when the crowd has reached the limit in waiting.
… they started “Icky Thump”. It is not excluded that somebody in the crowd had orgasm at this moment. Because it was fucking awesome, exactly because of the slow, but tense beginning, which made you mad. In Amsterdam the encore begun with “I'm Slowly Turning Into You”, the same sort of song. But there wasn’t such an agonizing suspense there, so I sensed it calmer.

In Amsterdam the main hymn of the album “Boarding house reach” - “Connected by love” was in the end of the main part of the show, in Moscow Jack played it before the last one. Of course, he didn’t sing it alone, he had our support. And our flashmobe continued - this time we had sheets with black hearts and signs “connected by Jack”.
The show ended without any surprises - tu-turututu-tuu-tuu - “Seven Nation Army”!
Once again - Jack got silent, let the crowd to sing solo, the hands were up around, moshing, and all that.
Then - the words of gratitude, a bow and that’s it.

Now I have compared the setlists at Amsterdam’ and Moscow shows - there were more songs. And how one person noticed in comments to my Fb post - the show there was more powerful. It’s strange how my senses made a change in the mind. Right because of the crazy and amazing crowd in Moscow it seemed that we had a cooler setlist. And what is more, it seemed to me, that in Amsterdam Jack communicated more with the musicians and in Moscow - in reverse, with the crowd. He often came to the edge of the stage, where I was standing, very close, looked at us, straight in the eyes. And then he said, that it wasn’t the first time that he saw some of the people and it was important to him.

Like in July, the emotions and reception are suddenly delayed. Looks like a protective reaction, if you feel everything at once - you will go crazy. So it comes to you gradually. You can live and work calmly, but suddenly memories from the show blow up in your mind. At this moment goosebumps start running over the skin and you find yourself staring at one point with a foolish smile.
