Bang!
The stack of old tin cans Zoe was shooting at tumbled down. She and Aurora were in an empty lot behind Bobby’s house. Zoe had happened to mention in conversation that she couldn’t use a gun very well, and Aurora had insisted she learn right away.
“Not bad,” Aurora said, going to re-stack the cans. “Though you were supposed to be aiming at the can on top of the stack. But no biggie. If that was a person you were trying to shoot in the head, you probably would’ve got him in the stomach.”
Zoe shrugged, lowering the gun. “I’m not exactly planning on shooting anyone in the head, so maybe it’s a good thing that my aim sucks.”
“Trust me, it’s not,” Aurora said. “You’re hanging out with Sam and Dean, and you have no idea what those boys get themselves into. Knowing how to use a gun is a good thing.” She beckoned to Zoe. “Come here. You’re still not holding it right.”
Zoe walked over to Aurora and Aurora spun her around to face the cans. She put her hand over Zoe’s and forced her fingers into the right place. “Okay, ready, aim, fire!”
Zoe fired the gun and missed the stack of cans completely. Aurora sighed. “Okay, at least you were holding it correctly that time.” She took Zoe’s hand again and put her finger on the trigger along with Zoe’s. “We’re going to hit the right can this time.”
The back door of Bobby’s house slammed and Dean walked outside. He raised his eyebrows upon seeing them. “Am I interrupting something?”
“You wish, Dean,” Aurora said, squinting and trying to aim Zoe’s gun. “We’re practicing.”
Dean smirked. “Lady with a gun. I approve.” He sat down on the steps next to the door.
Bang! Aurora’s finger pulled the trigger and the can on top of the stack toppled over. Aurora let go of Zoe, who lowered the gun. “Good job,” she said.
Zoe made a face. “Except for the part where you were the one who actually pulled the trigger on that one.”
Aurora shrugged. “It’s a start. Want to try it yourself?” She brushed off her hands and went to sit by Dean. She gave him a brief look. “Zoe, by the way, Dean is staring at your ass.”
Zoe turned around and glared at him. “Stop it!”
“I’m not!” Dean protested, lifting his hands in a picture of innocence. “You’re standing in front of me, and I’m watching you try to shoot a stack of cans, which believe me, is fascinating, but…..”
“This is another reason you need to learn how to use a gun, Zoe,” Aurora said. “Fire a bullet over his head. It might get him to behave.”
Playfully Zoe turned around and lifted the gun toward Dean, who threw himself off the step onto the ground. He glared at her. “Don’t do that, okay? Didn’t your mother teach you that you shouldn’t play with guns?”
“My mother taught me nothing except how to be the world’s worst mother,” Zoe replied, turning back to the stack of cans. “And I wasn’t going to shoot at you. Jeez.”
“Yeah, well….” Dean sat back down on the step. “You never know.”
“Contrary to popular belief, I’m not nearly as incompetent as I appear.” She concentrated on aiming the gun, then fired. The can on top fell and rolled across the ground. “So there,” she concluded, turning back to Dean and Aurora and smiling.
Aurora applauded with a grin. “You got it!”
“Awesome,” Dean said. “Next you’ll be aiming for moving targets.”
“Got that right,” Aurora said. “Start running.”
Dean groaned. “What did I do to deserve this?”
“Can’t you just be pleased with my accomplishment?” Zoe asked, walking over to him and Aurora and sitting next to him on the step.
“Does this mean you’re going to carry a gun from now on?” Dean asked.
Zoe shrugged. “Probably, I guess.”
Dean stared at her. “I can’t decide if that turns me on or terrifies me.”
Zoe shook her head and handed the gun to Dean. “If it worries you that much, you can keep it until we leave Bobby’s.”
Aurora clicked her tongue and rolled her eyes. “Zoe, Zoe. Now you have nothing to threaten him with.”
“Don’t you trust me, Ror?” Dean asked, smirking.
Aurora laughed. “Hmm, how to answer that….” She leaned over and planted a kiss on his cheek. “Zoe, you’re going to have to keep an eye on Dean when I’m not around. Make sure he doesn’t keep staring at unsuspecting women’s asses.” She clapped Zoe on the shoulder and stood up. “Anyway, good job. You’ll be a badass before you know it. Now I think I’d better find my man before he gets himself into trouble.” She gave them both a smile before turning and running back into Bobby’s house.
Dean raised his eyebrows. “Dunno what trouble she thinks Sam can get into at Bobby’s house, but okay. Unless she catches him watching porn, in which case I have the utmost sympathy for Sam.”
Zoe laughed. She got up and walked over to the cans she’d been shooting at, gathering them together to toss in the trash.
“I have to say, watching you try to shoot a stack of tin cans was the most entertaining thing I’ve seen all day,” Dean added.
Zoe rolled her eyes and pitched the cans in a rusty trash can next to the back door. “Oh, I’m sure. And you were definitely just watching to see if I could hit the can, right? Not because you were looking at my ass, as Aurora said.”
Dean, once again, was the picture of innocence. “What kind of person do you think I am, Zoe?” He laughed. “Only for you, honey.” Grinning, he stood up and walked over to Zoe, putting an arm around her shoulders. He slid the gun back into her hands. “Keep it.”
“Sure that’s all right with you?” Zoe asked, raising her eyebrows. “I mean, you said my having a gun might terrify you.”
“I also said it might turn me on,” Dean said, before leaning down to kiss her on the lips.
Zoe squealed in surprise and jerked backward. Dean burst into laughter. “That was cute.”
“Sorry,” Zoe said, her face burning. “I didn’t mean to - I didn’t expect - “ She broke off with a sigh and smiled sheepishly up at him. “Wanna try that again?”
“Why do you even have to ask? It’s beyond me.”
“I don’t - “
Dean’s lips covered hers again. “That was a rhetorical question,” he said, running his finger down her cheek and leaning his forehead against hers.
“Sorry.”
Dean laughed, tightening his arm around her shoulders. “Has anyone ever told you that you talk too much?”
“It’s been mentioned.”
“I agree with them.” Dean put his hands on her face and kissed her before she could respond.
