Venue Songs SetlistMain Setlist No pictures, for reasons you will soon find out!
God I love this band. Anyway, for the second leg of our journey we traveled to Indianapolis and the Music Mill. Tonight we were to be staying with
rosamundeb, so we headed over to her house before the show. When she got home we headed out to the venue, and were by far the first ones there. We heard a bit of the sound check, including E Eats Everything. Ros went out to buy a small camera to take in with her, and we chilled in front of the menu, praying that it wouldn't start raining. It held off, though, and soon we were let into the venue; they didn't check bags, but gave the solemn warning that anyone caught taking pictures would be thrown out of the show.
We waited, but not for that long, as Corn Mo came out a half an hour too early. After two of his songs one of the tech guys came over and told him that he needed to play a longer set because he had gone on early. We asked him to play Busey Boy, which it looked like he was going to play anyway, but he said he would for us.
rosamundeb had bought one of those crazy tabloids with headlines like "bat boy eats three people", and it had a centerfold of all kinds of crazy cats. We particularly liked the "angelicat", a cat "born" with wings.
aliste tore it out and
we put it right next to Flans' pedals for the show. We noticed there were seemingly two setlists for TMBG, one definitely the venue songs. As it turns out, they did the venue songs portion of the show first. During the end of Celebrate Brooklyn, Flans explained that They Might Be Giants were Their own opening band tonight, and that there would be a brief break between the venue songs and their regular set. He then started to leave the stage, but the rest of the band was still playing, so he ran back out and sang the last chorus to Celebrate Brooklyn.
When They came back out again, Their setlist was identical for the first couple of songs to that of last night. Flans kept getting really close to the edge of the stage right in front of me, occasionally looking down to make sure that he wasn't going to be stepping on my fingers. True to Their promise, the confetti cannons did not get set off during Dr. Worm tonight, being too early in the show (we later found out that in St. Louis there had been a discussion on when they were going to set them off, but Dan had not been privy to it, so he mistakenly set them off during Dr. Worm). They soon mixed up the setlist with XTC vs. Adam Ant, which I had never heard live. During Birdhouse, Linnell and Flans were both walking around the stage a lot, and managed to get tangled in each other's cords. After the song they tried to untangle but were turning in the wrong direction, so they only succeeded in getting more tangled. Finally Andy (the new roady) had to come out and untangle the cords for them. During one song Flans actually sat down on the platform in front of Marty's drums, which I was confused by, since the man never sits down seeminly, until after the song when you could see that his shoulder strap had fallen off his guitar.
At the beginning of She's An Angel,
rosamundeb said she was going to take off (since it has been a long couple of days for her, and she was really tired). A moment after she left, a security guy came through and caught
aliste taking pictures! He took her away, and myself and Jackie were very frightened and worried; they had said that you would be thrown out for taking pictures, and we were afraid that she wouldn't be let back in. However, our minds were put at ease when Jackie pointed out to me that Dan Miller had walked over to the edge of the stage and was talking to the roady, obviously telling him to tell the security guards to let Alice back in. It was quite a lengthy conversation, and eventually the roady left. When he came back Dan went over to the side again and when it looked like the roady said he didn't know what was happening, Dan appeared to be telling him to go out again and make sure she got back in. OMG Dan Miller you are the best. Needless to say,
aliste got back in, and shortly later
rosamundeb came back in with a map to her house just in case she left again, but she ended up staying for the rest of the time.
They did the Drink! waltz chant again, but it went a little less well this time... Flans didn't explain that it was supposed to be in time for the soundcheck, so it wasn't. Then, during the song people were just chanting "drink drink" at all times during the song, not just after Flans said "Drink!".
We thought they had perhaps forgotten about the confetti cannons, as they had not gone off even during Bed Bed Bed, but they went off on the "BOOM SHAKALAKA" of Robot Parade... and were pointed so well away from the stage this time that
aliste didn't even realize that they had gone off! They played Turn Around, which was super exciting, and before it Linnell explained that it was "one of those old songs we took the trouble to learn again." In the second encore they played Violin, bringing back the wave, as this was a new venue and they wanted to figure out the layout of the place. They were having problems finding the back wall, so Danny suggested they go side to side instead, which ended up being described as "the stoners to the drunks and back again" (on stage right, Flans said he saw three bongs back there, and then to stage left was the bar). They played the hard rockin' Hocus Pocus again with Corn Mo, and at one point when Corn Mo was crouched down and his hair was covering his face, Flans and Dan encircled him and crouched down around him. It was very cute.
After the show Andy the roady came out with a few photocopied extra setlists, and just dropped the stack in front of us. Perhaps he recognized us from St. Louis, but in any case it made it easy to grab one. Jackie got one of the used ones that had been taped down. Danny and Marty came out (Marty with a glass of wine). Alice was wearing her wrist band with first initial on it (argh, I had forgotten mine in Chicago!), and Danny noticed it. He asked if Marty had seen it, and we said yes, and that I had one but had forgotten it. Danny then replied "Oh, so you're both gay", referring to the shiny sparkly sequins, I guess. We of course found Dan back at the sound board, and thanked him again for sticking up for Alice. He thought it was pretty ridiculous that she would be kicked out for taking pictures. When we asked him to sign our setlists, he asked what we did with all these things. We of course replied "treasure them forever and ever," because what else were we going to say? He again asked if we had tickets for tomorrow, and told us that the next time we did one of these "follow the Grateful Dead things" again, to let him know and they would comp us a show. We also talked about his new facial hair, and he said he was doing it just to prove to himself that he couldn't grow any. Hehehe.
We went around back to the bus to see if Flans was around, but it was dark and non very inviting back there, so we gave up and went back to our cars. So, despite the brief scare of the camera debacle (and a bit because of it!), this was definitely an awesome show and a great second leg of the trip.
