Fic: The Darkest Night

Dec 16, 2012 22:39

It's been a long time since I wrote a story that was not either a WIP or an exchange story or a challenge story. But this one came to me tonight after the Children's Pageant at church, and I came home and just wrote it all up at once. And though it's been a very long time, I thought this was a good place for it.

Rating: G, but a little angsty

Thank you dear! This is rather angsty for a holiday fic, so I'm glad you liked it.

I really enjoyed this. I even saw myself in it once. Lol. (When she says that she hopes she hasn't ruined Pippins chances of coming home by writing her positive thoughts in the book, that bit was so very much like something I would believe. I'm always afraid I will jinx something.). I liked reading Pimpernel's thoughts. This was sweet. You should write more little fictions. The song was lovely too by the way.

So do I, I think a lot of us do that--worrying that we will jinx things!

I'm glad you liked the song. It was what came first, and suddenly I knew one of Pippin's sisters had written it while he was gone. And then I figured out it was Pimpernel. For some strange reason she's my favorite of his sisters!

I like that, very much. I like Pimpernel's dogged determination to go on hoping. I've never thought a great deal about the Hobbits left behind during that Year of the Troubles; this certainly made me do so...

I love Troubles fic, even though it can sometimes be very disturbing to think of some of the things the hobbits must have endured. But I think the fact that they did endure is what makes it so appealing, showing that bravery in hobbit hearts was not merely confined to those who went on the Quest.

Thank you so much for that--I think one of the main things that makes Tolkien's world so special is the way it mingles heartbreak and beauty, and I try to reflect that when I can.

What a wonderful piece of writing! "Hold tight to faith and hope and love" - isn't that what we are all doing (or need to be) in response to the killings in Connecticut? Even without that, I like this very much.

Thank you.

It's possible that horrid news was partly what put me into such an introspective mood and I've always felt that the hobbit response to disaster is an example of how to get through terrible things--compassion (or as Gandalf called it "Pity") and courage.
