So I was watching The Legend of Old Gregg the other day, and a thought occurred to me; what the fuck is Ramsay (Rich Fulcher’s character) getting out of intentionally getting Vince and Howard to go out on Black Lake at a time when it’s plainly known to be dangerous to do so?
We have this exchange, when Ramsay suggests that fishing out on Black Lake is a great way to find artistic inspiration.
Howard: That sounds great! We could do that tomorrow.
Ramsay: Uh, let me let you in on a little secret. Gather round- not you, Naan Bread! The best time to go out on Black Lake is right now, when the moon is full. You and your lady friend can have a special time together. I’ll even give you a discount; 40 Euro.
And then, when Vince gets back:
Vince: It was a dark night.
Lucien: Arr, that’s more like it, son.
Vince: And the moon was full.
Lucien: A-har, I‘m feelin’ rigid.
Vince: I was out on Black Lake.
(cue silence, and the sound of EVERY MAN IN THE PUB pissing himself)
Lucien: What did you say, boy?
Vince: Black Lake?
Lucien: You should never go out on Black Lake when the moon be full.
Vince: Why?
Lucien: Because there’s somethin’ out there, somethin’ evil. Somethin’ that goes by the name of… Old Gregg.
So this is clearly a thing that EVERYONE KNOWS. You do not go out on Black Lake when the moon is full. Ramsay’s helpful suggestion, then, looks a whole lot less like chance ignorance and much more like intentionally setting Howard and Vince up to get kidnapped/eaten/murdered/whatever the legends say Old Gregg will do to them. When Howard suggests they go out the next day, Ramsay immediately goes no, you should go tonight! He has them lean in so no-one else will overhear, and even adds in a bargain on the boat rental to sweeten the deal.
The question then is- why? Does Ramsay have some kind of agreement with Old Gregg? Provide him with hapless tourists-slash-burly moustachioed types ‘cos Ramsay knows that’s Gregg’s type? Is his wife Matilda, whose face we never see, SECRETLY OLD GREGG? Is he a cousin of Bob Fossil who bears a grudge against Howard and Vince for unknown reasons and wants them dead?
GIMME THOUGHTS, PEOPLE.
I reckon with Vince and Howard it was a two for one kinda deal. Gregg buys some of his seashell art in exchange for the occasional handsome traveller, and we all know that Fulcher characters are incapable of resisting lovely Vince. I feel like he saw the two of them as an ideal opportunity; clearly they were together, but the sooner he got Howard out the way the sooner he could have Vince. And he knew just the place to send Howard.
@peacockbluey: Yeah, this is very similar to my read of it. It’s a near-constant with Rich Fulcher characters that they are somehow secretly (or not so secretly) scheming to seduce Vince, and I could easily believe that Ramsay is verrrrrry well aware of Old Gregg’s type. He’s probably sent a few clueless tourists Gregg’s way before (after all, he turns a profit and Gregg gets his men, so it’s a good deal for both of them), but with Howard and Vince, Ramsay has the added bonus of being able to get Howard out of the way (assuming Gregg will take him) and have Vince all to himself. And then he can offer to comfort Vince…
