Kansas Wedding
Her phone was ringing again. Tracy immediately tucked her bouquet under her arm and fished it out of the ridiculously tiny clutches all the bridesmaids had been given, only to have it snatched from her hand before she could press it to her ear. She looked up to see Mohinder putting it into his own pocket, looking disapproving.
"It might be important!"
"It can wait until the reception, at least," said Mohinder firmly. "This is Daphne and Ando's wedding. You're supposed to be helping the bride, not fixing the world."
Tracy rolled her eyes, but obediently took out her bouquet from under her arm and tried to make the flowers look a little less squashed. "You're such a woman sometimes. Why do I have to be a bridesmaid, again? I barely know Daphne."
"Because you guys apparently have no female friends," said Daphne, suddenly appearing next to them. "I mean, seriously, it's a bit disturbing. We got Hiro's sister, and then it was either you or that cheerleader from Texas they saved that one time. Oh, and speaking of-" She thrust a buttonhole at Mohinder. "We can't find Peter. Time to step up, Dr Suresh, you're now groomsman number two."
"What?" Mohinder was staring at the small flower as though it was a grenade, and holding it about as gingerly. "Where is he?"
"How should I know? Probably saving the world or something. You walk down with Tracy. See you in a minute." And she superzipped away before either of them could protest.
Tracy nudged Mohinder in the ribs. "PETER gets to fix the world..."
"Yes, yes, very good," said Mohinder wearily, trying to tuck the small flower into his suit. Tracy took it from him and did it herself, smoothing her lapels as she did so. "So who's groomsman number one?"
"No idea. Some friend of Hiro's, he said he knew him from a while back. Adam something-?"
"Monroe," said an all-too-familiar voice from behind Mohinder, as Adam stepped into view at his side with his usual cocky smile in place. "Don't worry, we have all evening to get to know one another. Mohinder, my good man!" He grabbed Mohinder's hand and shook it vigorously. "It's been too long."
"Really? I'd have thought you'd be used to that," said Mohinder dryly. Adam just grinned and clapped him on the shoulder.
"Same old Mohinder. Aren't you going to introduce me to the lovely lady?"
"I suppose, yes, this is-"
"Tracy Strauss," cut in Tracy, holding out her own hand to Adam.
Adam didn't shake it, however, but raised it to his lips and kissed it, and winked. "Charmed."
"I'm sure," said Tracy. A second later, her hand frosted over, and Adam dropped it with a yelp. Mohinder looked away, unable to suppress a smile, and saw the main doors open. Glorious Kansas sunshine spilled in as Kimiko ran towards them, dress pulled up out of the way of her ankles.
"Am I too late? Hiro was supposed to be dropping me off but he got some call from Peter-"
"No, the bride's not here yet," said Mohinder, "In fact, last time we saw her she wasn't even dressed yet..."
At that instant, Daphne zipped back next to them, now in her wedding dress and with her (thoroughly windswept) father attached to her arm. "There!" she said, quickly readjusting her skirt so that they covered the sneakers she was wearing under it. "All set."
"Right." Tracy leaned round the door into the church and signalled to Micah, who nodded and laid a hand on the speaker system, which immediately started playing music. All the people seated turned their heads towards them. Adam proferred an arm to Kimiko and led her through the double doors down the aisle.
"Remember what we talked about," hissed Tracy to Daphne.
"I'll be good," muttered Daphne, rolling her eyes. Tracy slid her own arm into Mohinder's and smiled up at him before they too set off down the aisle.
"Talk about what?" whispered Mohinder out of the side of his mouth.
"At the rehearsal, she found walking down the aisle a bit... slow," Tracy whispered back, masterfully keeping a smile on her face throughout.
As Mohinder tried to imagine that, Adam and Kimiko parted in front of them and went to stand either side of the aisle. Now they could see Ando and Hiro standing at the front, waiting. Ando was clearly making an effort to appear austere and serious, but Hiro beamed widely and waved at Mohinder with both hands. Tracy saw Kimiko shoot Hiro a death glare from her side of the stage.
They too split off and went to stand at their respective sides. Micah put a hand on the speaker system again, and the music changed to the wedding march. All the congregation rose to their feet as Daphne entered on father's arm.
She really did look lovely, Mohinder thought. While he'd never quite understood what was going on with her hair, today she'd pinned flowers into it, and her dress - fitted in the bodice but with a long train behind her - seemed to match her rather streamlined approach to life. Ando's face broke into a smile when he saw her, and she grinned back at him, and -
People gasped, the flower stands in the aisle fell down and song sheets went flying as she zipped up the aisle. In an instant she was standing next to Ando with the same happy smile on her face. Her father was not so composed, and nearly fell over in shock. Behind her, Mohinder saw Tracy bury her face in her hand in despair.
"Uhh," began the priest hesitantly. "Dearly beloved..."
