I swore I'd never do this.
Ranted, raved, and adamantly refused.
Sometimes the muse has other ideas.
But, this in no way, shape or form means I accept what happened. The muse might go traitorus on me from time to time, but my heart will NEVER agree.

I know I should have more of a heading here, but I've left it off on purpose. If you can't figure out who, when, or what, then you missed the point of it anyway. And if I tell you, you miss it before you start.
Holes
the spear crashed through
two hearts shattered
broken pieces, fragile shards, lying in the dust
the soldier stared at them in shock
the wife cried
the soldier knew the wound, had felt it before
the wife disagreed
this was different
the pieces were so small
the hole so large
the protective wall of the past gone
the agony unbearable
days passed, empty, cold
the wife mourned
the soldier endured
and the broken pieces were collected
“leave them” said the soldier
“no” replied the wife
“they won’t go back together right” the soldier scoffed
“i know,” the wife replied, “but he’d still love them”
mending, painful stitches, ragged patches
how do you rebuild what’s lost forever?
how do you rebuild without all the parts?
the nights were still empty
the days were still cold
the heart remade - the holes remained
the soldier carried on
battles, tactics, duty
learned to build again the armor to protect the broken heart
the wife tended to its ragged edges
watched the stars
learned to feel unseen fingers caressing on the breeze
and the woman
the woman learned to love the holes
because she knew why the pieces didn’t fit
she carried shards from two hearts rebuilt into one

“So lately, been wondering,
Who will be there to take my place
When I'm gone, you'll need love
To light the shadows on your face…
And maybe, I'll find out
The way to make it back someday
To watch you, to guide you
Through the darkest of your days…
I know now, just quite how
My life and love might still go on
In your heart, in your mind
I'll stay with you for all of time…”
