Today, at long last, I finally sent off an e-mail to Temple's Concert Choir (the group I sing with) inviting any interested singers to join me in an early music choir this next term. I already have about five potential singers from personal conversations, but I'm hoping that I'll get a fairly strong response and can put together a strong and talented group. It's a lot of work to do this sort of thing, but it's something I really want to do again, and I'm excited about the possibilities, depending on my singers' capabilities.
I'm approaching things a little differently this time, I'm going to put a lot more responsibility into the hands of the singers themselves (following the model of the Tallis Scholars in that way, who leave most interpretation up to the individual singers). I'm also not going to apply an arbitrary cut-off of music at 1600 A.D. - depending on the strength of my basses especially, I'm hoping I can even pull out some Schütz. Big works may include a Guerrero mass (in a partnership with a prominent instrumental early music specialist), and hopefully Dufay's Missa Ave Regina Caelorum... maybe I'll even try to revive the Ave Regina Caelorum motet it's based off of, which I was unsuccessful in preparing at Portland State.
Of course, until I start getting some replies, it's all pipe dreams. And I have loads and loads of work to do in the next two weeks for my philosophy classes, which will keep me much more occupied than I would wish. But today is my flatmate's birthday, so tonight, at least, I'll probably mostly take off.
