It’s Jongin’s bad luck that he’s close friends with the president of the dance club in the school, Taemin, that he got cajoled (forced) to help out during the annual performance arts showcase. It also doesn't help that Yixing, the vice president, caught a cold some days ago and refused to leave his dorm room unless absolutely necessary (apparently, the showcase doesn't fall into that category).
"Please," Taemin had pleaded over the huge serving of gelato, and mid-bite, Jongin freezes at the realization that the ice cream treat came with strings attached. Taemin's good with manipulating people like that, and they've been friends since forever, and Jongin usually ends up enjoying himself whenever he gets involved in these things anyway, so he agrees easily.
It's not that bad, Jongin muses to himself, leading the group of choir performers to the area backstage. This would be the first official rehearsal, and some of the performers look really nervous, so Jongin flashes them a quick smile and tell them "good luck" before they're being ushered on stage. It's really not that bad, and he also gets a good view of the performance from here.
Taemin pops by then, tossing a bottle of water to Jongin. "Girls would kill to have your seat," he comments, eyes fixed on the stage. Even though it's just a rehearsal, the choir isn't cutting any slack and the sound is wonderful.
"Why?"
Just then, someone steps forward from the group to the center of the stage, performing a solo section. Maybe it's because he's a little shorter than the other boys, so Jongin didn't see him just now, but damn does he have an angelic voice.
"Kim Joonmyun, lead vocal of the school's rock band. He's apparently very popular with everyone... If this rehearsal wasn't restricted to performers and organizers only, this place would be flooded with his fans already," Taemin answers.
"Well, he does have a nice voice --"
There's a loud thud from the stage, and when Jongin turns to look, the performance stops abruptly. The harmonious voices change to frantic yelling and Taemin drags him along to take a look.
"Joonmyun-sunbae fainted!" A choir member cries.
"Please give him some space," Taemin orders, and the crowd disperses a little for them to make their way to the middle. Joonmyun is out cold, not responding to anything, and Taemin sighs. "It's a big problem that he's the club president... where's Baekhyun?"
"He's not performing, so he didn't come," someone answers.
"Jongin," Taemin says, "can you bring him to the infirmary? The rest of you, we're sorry, but we have to resume the rehearsal. Please prepare accordingly."
Taemin is really impressive, Jongin thinks, as he scoops Joonmyun up in his arms and makes his way out of the silent auditorium.
On his way to the infirmary, Jongin receives some odd looks from some students and doesn't know where to place his gaze on, so he settles on Joonmyun's face instead. It's getting quite obvious why this guy's so popular -- he has distinct but gentle features, clear skin and a default expression like he belongs up in the heavens, strumming a harp or something. Shit. Jongin grumbles. He's really attractive.
When Jongin tries to get the door to the infirmary open with all his might, Joonmyun stirs and his eyes open. "What --" he begins, but doesn't get to finish his sentence as the door opens right then and Jongin loses balance so that he topples right on top of Joonmyun.
"I'm sorry!" Jongin splutters, getting off the other in an instant but Joonmyun only laughs, a pale pink flush settling on his cheeks.
"It's fine. It looks like I blacked out again, huh?"
"Again...?"
"Right," Joonmyun says, plopping down on one of the beds near them. "Take a seat. Since you helped me, I shall tell you my secret then."
Jongin gulps at the bright twinkle in Joonmyun's eyes, and feels his face turn hot.
He's screwed.
