I have very quiet shoes, and generally good hearing when the office is quiet. My hearing of soft sounds vs quiet is very good. Picking voices out of background noise? Not so much. I routinely scare the pants off my coworkers unless I'm careful to make noise when approaching them, though Enter Sandman on my headphones may not have helped.
My officemate just returned the favor, sneaking in on quiet shoes to ask me a question. EEEP!
There's a moment in The Killing Joke (I think) where Commissioner Gordon vanishes on Batman. And he remarks 'So that's how that feels.'
