The intern from Yemen goes home on Friday :-( I never would have talked to her if she was a normal intern. I assumed that she was an undergrad, but she actually has a bachelors in French (or something like that). She was working in the Motorola supply chain HR department, so she didn't need a technical degree.
I was questioning her trying to figure out why we would bring an intern all the way from Yemen to do HR work, when I learned that Motorola didn't actually hire/pay her. She works for the U.S. State Department. There is a State Department program go to Muslim countries, and bring 24 Muslim women to Chicago to work for the summer. The State Department pays for everything, and the women go to work as if they are real employees.
Clearly this is some good will program to spend tax dollars to improve relations with Muslim countries. I am not sure if it has a high ROI, but she enjoyed America while she was here.
She said that she was a finalist for some other fellowship program to go to Northwestern business school. She lost that and accepted the State Department gig as conciliation. She expects to win the fellowship and return in 2010.
