not to be a comment-whore, but seriously, does anyone go on this effin' thing anymore?
it's more of a way to get baggage off my chest and to stay in touch with non-facebook ridgefield friends.
anyway, in light of the general bad rep i get for living where i live, i will now present:
ten reasons i love living in the bronx
1. everything on east fordham road costs seven dollars. need a new shirt? seven dollars. shoes? seven dollars. cigarettes? seven dollars. a boostmobile cell phone? seven dollars. tattoo? you got it-seven dollars.
2. there's this guy who stands near the bathgate entrance who screams passages from 'the confessions of nat turner' into a megaphone. it's usually about how soon, black people will take over the world and all the white people will go to hell. i give him props--even if i always avoid him like the plague.
3. sometimes, when we're walking to the bars--or worse, back from the bars--there are children playing on the street. i mean, like, 2AM on a wednesday night. what the hell are they doing up so late? it's a mystery. but they're fun to talk to when you're drunk.
4. i can feel like i'm in about a million different countries in a five minute walk. bongo players at the train stop? jamaica. arthur ave? italy. tamale stand? argentina. corner store? mexico. i love the fact that i feel like a foreigner, i like using my spanish to thank the lady i buy food from. very cool.
5. people think i'm a lot more badass than i am. let me tell you: i live in a tiny little oasis, being on campus. i cannot see any skyscrapers from my window, or hear any car alarms, or smell exhaust. but someone hears that there was a shooting in the bronx, and immediately it's like, "christine, are you ok?!" yes, i'm fine. i'm strong. i survived.
6. this is such a copout, but it's nice being right outside of manhattan. i can go in whenever i feel like, but i also don't feel the constant pressure to be trendy that i feel when im in manhattan. plus, things are cheaper here. i mean, today, i went into the city for just two hours. usually when im in ridgefield, it's an all-day affair.
7. i like taking photos of all the weird shit that we find on the street. like, this one time, i took a picture of this puddle of bright green fluid that was coming out of a car. Like, what the hell is that?
8. i don't know anyone outside of fordham students. how is this good? well, for anonymity reasons. i can be whoever i want to be when i go outside campus. i don't have to worry about seeing anyone i know.
9. i feel like i'm living in the real world. i know, i know, i really don't know anything about being on my own yet. but in the last few months i've learned to be (more) responsible for myself, and in a way that not all college students can claim to. the bronx is nothing if not a teacher: unlike in ridgefield, i have to constantly be aware of dangers, and i get to do adult things: i drink at bars, not frat parties, and i like it that way.
10. there is cell phone reception everywhere.
