Loved this episode. Gwen and Elyan's family chemistry was amazing, you could see right away they were siblings. (Also excellent casting there! They even look like they could be related) I love her annoyance it was like the best proof positive that he was her brother. Adn she brought up Tom, I don't know how to deal with the fact that the Merlin writers have been experimenting with continuity this season. SHOW IT'S ALMOST LIKE YOU'RE ACTUALLY GOOD TV, I AM SO PROUD OF YOU.

Also YES the bit with the glass, I just wish they could try using that kind of subtlety more often! Less Smirkgana, more Merlin being denied.

As for 6 she said they must've heard her scream. I don't blame her, that skeleton startled me too. Eep.

Also Morgana. T_T On the one hand I vastly prefer how much agency she's been given this season as opposed to in season 2. On the other hand, what is she doing, Gwen and Arthur have never been anything but good to her. LOOK AT YOUR LIFE. LOOK AT YOUR CHOICES. I think I'm going to have to give up on her now, my powers of denial only stretch so far.

There was an alsmot kiss though! Oh my poor Pendragons, SO CLOSE AND YET SO FAR. Here, I will try to make it up to them.

So in love with Gwen and Elyan. BEST SIBLINGS EVER, Y/Y?

They're actually getting GOOD. This is without a doubt the best series so far. I'm so happy with the writers. I mean obviously they're still failing in a million ways, but last year they were failing in a million and ONE ways. IMPROVEMENT.

BEST. Merlin might fail in a lot of ways but generally its' surprise!family members are great.

Maybe by season 5 they'll be down to just failing in 500 thousand ways? I LIVE IN HOPE.

But does Morgana really have agency this season? O_o I mean, when all is said and done, she has been acting as basically nothing more than Morgause's errand girl, at her beck and call, not really practicing any magic deliberately or on her own, only carrying spells for Morgause. The scene when Morgause was snapping, "Then your work isn't finished yet" emphasized this dynamic ever more. :(

And lol, she did mention Tom, but on the other hand would Tom really no mention her sibling before he died, like, "if I die, could you tell..."? It's so obvious that this brother just popped out of nowhere, lol...but oh well, props for trying! :p (It's like with the Sidhe last week--I was so impressed that they actually remembered a villain from season 1, only to then realize that if this plot was 20 years in the making then they wouldn't have been all okay with Sophia killing Arthur a mere two years ago, lol).

I don't really get the impression that her dynamic with Morgause is as unequal as that. Morgause is her older sister and I think Morgana is still a little wary about her control over her own magic. I'm thinking about that scene in 3.02 where she was nervous before Morgause re-assured her the magic staff she gave her would be taking care of most of the work. She's working with Morgause but Morgause is'nt forcing her, their goals are in alignment. (See this episode and how eager she was to have Arthur dead). So yeah, I think she's shown a whole lot more agency this season then she did last where she did nothin and was afraid the entire time.

Haha yeah but points for trying to retroactively fix it. Merlin isn't quite at the point where fanwanking isn't required yet. And did Tom get a chance to talk properly with Gwen before he died? From what I remember it was all very rushed, he was dragged off and then he didn't mention he was going to try to escape so his death was fairly sudden.

Yeah but exactly, the magical staff would do all the work for her--Morgana wouldn't need to do any magic. And then look at Morgana's accidental magic with the fire with Merlin...it looks like she hasn't learned nearly ANYTHING in the last year, that instead of training her and guiding her in magic Morgause has mostly just been using her and keeping her in the dark about how to use her magic. And I have to wonder now about Morgause's parentage anyway, for them to still be sisters after the Uther Retcon....but yes, I suppose she is showing more agency than she did last season when she was mostly just window dressing, lol. Though she's still being manipulated as much as she was then with Alvarr.

Yes, they did get the chance to talk a little, when Gwen is all, "We're going to get you out of here!" and he's apologizing and saying he only did it because he wanted to make her have a better life, and she's all, "But I AM happy already", etc. During that conversation he definitely seemed to think that he was gone for (and I'm pretty sure it happened before Morgana saw him and gave him the key and the hope of even escaping), and had time to explain himself and such to Gwen, so I think he could have said something about the brother, or also not implied that Gwen was his only child. ;)
