Guys, I booked my Loncon hostel.

Weeks late, so it's nowhere near the con site (it's somewhere near Canary Wharf instead), but the good thing about that is that it's actually pretty fucking cheap (and probably horrible, but never mind that, I'll be at the con all day anyway ( Read more... )

I just realised that, since I'm arriving on Wednesday, I *am*, in fact, also available on entirely con-less Wednesday evening. This should have been obvious to me from the start, but for some reason it was not.

Oh, I totally missed your comment above when you made it, sorry!

I'm working 8-6 all week and the entire weekend Fri-Sun inclusive is basically going to be taken up by boyfriend's brother's wedding - but I'm free on Weds night! What time are you arriving in town? :-)

(Late Thu is also doable at a pinch although obv less preferable due to morning start- Excel Centre's a hop skip and a jump from me and there are certainly food options around, although probably nothing particularly gourmet!)

Well, if everything works out, I should arrive at four in the afternoon... knowing the German rail system, though, there's probably about a 50% chance of serious delays.
However, since you work till six, meeting before, what, sevenish? probably wouldn't be practical anyway, so how about we just meet at the earliest time that you can comfortably make it?
I'll be staying somewhere in/at (prepositions, why so difficult) the Docklands (Glenaffric Avenue, to be precise); I actually haven't done any research yet on how to get anywhere from there, but... public transport being generally pretty good in London, I think that shouldn't be a problem. I hope.

Did you see my reply below?
Anyway, here's my phone number - text me, in case we don't manage to finalise things while I'm still in a place with internet access. (Hint: basically, Tuesday afternoon is the cut-off time for internet contact.) And yes, I'm so old-fashioned as to not have a smartphone, alas, so texting is the only way to communicate with me while I'm travelling.

Rarr! Hope I haven't missed internet cut-off time.

Have just worked out that Loncon is taking place literally next to where I work, which is exciting, so I'll be in your neck of the woods when I finish! What do you fancy for dinner? There are various probably somewhat uninspired options around the area itself, a fantastic but mid-priced vegetarian buffet place in central London that I really enjoy taking people to but involves travel, or the option of coming round our house for a (probably quite basic) veggie meal. It would be lovely to have you although the place might be a bit of a mess!

My number is 07743898742, anyway. Text me when you hit gone and I'll text you when I've finished work? Travel safe! xx

veggie buffet sounds good; it'll probably be my last chance for good food until after the con, so I'd like to take it. :D (I do appreciate really nice food...) My hostel's in the Docklands area, btw, Glenaffric Ave. - I assume it'll be reasonably easy to get from there to the city centre?
Will text you when I've arrived - or if there's a serious delay.
We're talking about Wednesday, right?

According to TFL (you are familiar with Transport for London website yes? It will plan your route for you, usually with only minor hiccups) it looks like it'll be about forty mins - DLR to Bank then Central Line to Oxford Circus. Just FYI veggie buffet is payment by weight and affordability sort of depends how much you eat - I've had a restrained but satisfying meal there for £8, but usually end up spending £15-20 (I mention this because presumably con = expense, so if you've an eye on budget there are cheaper options. It's nice food though and the portion control does enable you to be thrifty if you want.)

Travel safe and text me if you're stuck, lost etc - I'll be in the area and have internet capacity and if necessary access to a car!
