This week in class we have been studing drama and one of the plays I read in the prescibed reading was really beautiful. Andres Mother by Terrence McNally, is a short but well written meaningful play that deals with a few things. When reading this play i was listening to my ipod and evermores song I'll never let you go, came on. It deals with the issue of never letting go of someone, and although during the play everyone has to symboliclly let go of Andre, they will never let go of his memoery, and i thought this was a good song to represent that.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ClTbW74dZM&feature=related They play deals with the issuse of letting go of a loved one, AIDS and the relationship between Andre and his mother. Because it is so short, we are able to use out imagination to fill the purposful void that has been left for us. The effective use of stage directions also helps you use your imagination as i was activly able to picture Andres mother at the end of the play kissing her white balloon goodbye and letting it go.
"Andre's Mother stands alone holding her whitle balloon. Her lips tremble. She looks on the verge of breaking down.."
The adjective, 'tremble', is an effective way of sending a message to our imagination in regards to the current state of mind of the charecter, how she wouold be feeling and what she would physically look like at that particular moment in the play.
I really enjoyed reading it and I felt that it would be able to resonate with many people who have in fact read it.
That is what i feel literate really is. If a story, play, essay or journal means something to you personally then that really is what the essence of literature is about.
