I figured that, before I got too deep into the story with Aeolos, Bastian and Ciardall, I'd fill you all in on just how my little magical cleric sees and a bit about his character.

Aeolos and His Magic Sense

Firstly, Aeolos is from the island of Glenhollow in the Comrass region of Kaigan.  The story is set in the city of Porton, the country of Cygma on Norabardia.  He is capable of traveling from one planet to another or from one dimension to another by opening portals.

The people of Glenhollow worship the goddess Kupala, whose power is over summer, sexuality, herbs and magic.  The members of the Sisterhood focus on the summer and sexual aspects of the goddess, while the members of the Brotherhood focus on the herbs and magic.  He’s a master wizard and a cleric, not having taken his final vows yet, he isn’t a priest.

Aeolos is twenty-two years old and had lived on the island for his entire life, until he left about two years before the time of the story, to explore the worlds and learn as much as he could about them.  He’s of medium height and build, with reddish-brown hair that is cut a bob and gray-green eyes.  He typically wears the pale green robes of his order, with a hooded cowl and an amulet.  The amulet is a religious symbol, oval in shaped and embossed with a fern frond.  It hums softly when someone near him lies and grows warm with either his goddess or his Elder (the person in charge of the Brotherhood) want to speak to him.

He doesn’t have a pupil in his eyes, instead he uses magic sensing to “see” his surroundings.  This alters how he sees things.  He has a very different concept of color from the normal.  To his eyes, the sky is very faintly yellow and the ground is faintly red, whether that ground is covered with grass or stone or any other material.  Fire is bright red, but with none of the shades or variations most people perceive.  Instead, further from the flame, the red grows paler as the heat diminishes.  Most inanimate objects are various shades of green, but metal is red.  Any fluid is blue, whether that fluid is ink, water or blood.  Warm fluids tend to be violet in color.  Living things with sentience are usually various shades of gray, but children, innocents and animals tend to be nearly invisible to him.

Using this sense, Aeolos can perceive objects or people in the area around him.  He can discern their shape and size, as well as their distance from him and how fast they are moving.  He cannot see features, such as facial expressions, hair or eye colors, etc.  He can tell what materials are used to make something, unless the object has been together for an extremely long time.  He can perceive the temperature of objects as well.  The warmer an object is, the redder it becomes.  The colder an object is, the bluer it becomes.  He can see if someone has magic or not and what kind of magic they have.  This might lead to confusion when he’s trying to explain what he’s seeing to a normally sighed person.

Although the majority of his magic sense is typically focused in front of him, he can sense in every direction.  He cannot sense equally in every direction at the same time, but he does not need to turn his body to shift where his magic sense is focused.  Out of habit more than anything else, he will turn towards whatever he wants to “look at”.  He can tell if someone is walking up behind him, although he might not perceive the person’s intentions towards him, unless his sense is turned towards them.

He also tends to rely more on his other senses than other people might - noticing smells, sounds and textures more and being more sensitive to changes in the atmosphere.  He has learned to tell the emotions of others through their body language and the flairs and pulses of their aura.

While some facial expressions are rather universal, others are learned.  Having never seen these learned expressions, he cannot mimic them.  This makes him somewhat less expressive than some people are, although his voice does carry his emotions and his body reacts as would be expected.  For example, when embarrassed, he blushes and draws away, often ducking his chin.  This is because he feels the heat of the blush and has learned that people comment on how “red” his face is.

How people react when they see his eyes for the first time varies.  Some are frightened by it, others are just disturbed and a few are intrigued.  Never really knowing how someone will react, he tends to keep his eyes closed most of the time.  When he’s frustrated or angry, he will open his eyes fully.  When he’s intrigued or wanting to look at someone in particular, he will open his eyes to slits.  Because of this and his habit of turning towards things he is looking at, many people do not realize he is actually blind at first.

Because his magic sense does not allow him to perceive non-sentient animals, he is often rather timid of them.  He has one horse that he can ride comfortably, but others frighten him.  He prefers riding in carriages or wagons to traveling on horseback.  He also is very uncertain about how to behave towards children and innocents for the same reason that animals frighten him.

In places where the weave is weak, his mage sense doesn’t work very well.  Since he is used to relying on his magical sense, it is very difficult for him to get around in such places.  In magically “dead” areas - that is, places where magic cannot work or where the weave is gone for some reason - his sense doesn’t work at all and he is completely and truly blind.  Under such circumstances, he is forced to rely on other people or a cane to negotiate his surroundings.

Due to the structure of his eyes, he has to be careful not to damage his eyes with bright light.  This is another benefit of keeping his eyes closed most of the time.  Since his eyes remain closed, the irises don’t react to light as they normally would.  Also, with them closed, his eyes are protected from harm due to bright light.
